Prada presents “Role Play”, an exhibition organized with the support of Fondazione Prada, at Prada Aoyama Tokyo from 11 March to 20 June 2022. The fifth floor of the iconic building designed by Herzog & de Meuron hosts a second version of the planned project in the spaces of the Prada Foundation Observatory in Milan from 19 February to 27 June 2022.

The exhibition, curated by Melissa Harris, explores the processes of research, projection and creation of possible alternative and idealized identities. Role play, the creation of alter egos and the proliferation of oneself are among the possible strategies that the artists of the exhibition adopt to investigate the essence of each individual and the external image of him. As Melissa Harris points out, “an alter ego, a character or an avatar can represent aspirations. They can belong to one’s personal and cultural history or evoke a sense of otherness. They can be a form of activism, or a means of moving through deep-rooted, even extreme positions towards empathy, to literally put yourself in someone else’s shoes. ”

Photography, since its invention, has been one of the most suitable visual languages for investigating otherness, exploiting its objective nature and the sense of authenticity perceived in front of a photographic image. In recent decades, this medium has evolved to embrace gaming, social platforms and other innovative role-playing contexts to the extent that it reinforces our obsession with the concept of identity.

In Tokyo, the exhibition includes photographs, videos and sound works by international artists such as Juno Calypso, Beatrice Marchi, Haruka Sakaguchi and Griselda San Martin, Tomoko Sawada and Bogosi Sekhukhuni, in a light installation conceived by the creative agency Random Studio.
