The story of Franco Padiglione is the expression of a goldsmith’s art that brings with it a hundred years of tradition.  Francesco Padiglione, father of Franco from an early age was bewitched by the colors of the red-hot gold in transformation and at the young age of 14 he starts going to a goldsmith’s shop every day after school. Francesco observes, draws, learns as much as possible the various phases of the goldsmith’s art. Mastering the techniques with innate predisposition, Francesco is therefore called to collaborate in an important Neapolitan laboratory of high platinum jewelry that needs his creativity. After years working for the Neapolitan laboratory, he decided in 1958 to open his own atelier in Palermo. In the Sicilian capital, Francesco lays the foundations for the success that today distinguishes the artisan brand. Since the end of the 1980s, his son Franco works alongside his father Francesco and soon becomes the perfect partnership that combines tradition and innovation. The colorful and multiform grace of coral, hard stones such as agate, aquamarine, emerald and jade are combined according to mutual affinities and shades of light. Today Franco has the creative direction of the brand, selects the stones following the reference of proportions and color, designs each jewel drawing from the family archive and proposing new ideas that start from the observation of harmonic movement as in dance. But the real challenge of recent years is to “re-edit” the family jewels, updating the shapes or even using elements, details or stones to give them a new life. “Usually – Franco Paviglione tells us – behind a historical jewel there is a strong emotional component and it is precisely on this that we aim to revolutionize it”. From a brooch a ring can come to life and from a necklace perhaps a bracelet, but not only that, a valuable element can be a key or a coin or a jewel on which to design a new precious story ad hoc.

La storia di Franco Padiglione è l’espressione di un’arte orafa che porta con sé settanta anni di tradizione. Francesco Padiglione padre di Franco sin da piccolo infatti rimane stregato dai colori dell’oro rovente in trasformazione e alla giovane età di 14 anni prende ad andare a bottega da un maestro orafo ogni giorno dopo la scuola. Francesco osserva, disegna, apprende il più possibile le varie fasi dell’arte orafa. Padroneggiando le tecniche con innata predisposizione Francesco viene quindi chiamato per la peculiarità della sua lavorazione dei metalli preziosi a collaborare in un importante laboratorio napoletano di alta gioielleria in platino che ha bisogno della sua creatività. Dopo anni alle dipendenze del laboratorio partenopeo, decide nel 1958 di aprire il proprio atelier a Palermo. Nel capoluogo siciliano, Francesco getta le basi per il successo che oggi contraddistingue il marchio artigianale. Dalla fine degli anni Ottanta, il figlio Franco affianca il padre Francesco ed è presto partnernariato perfetto che combina tradizione e innovazione. La grazia variopinta e multiforme del corallo, le pietre dure come l’agata, l’acquamarina, lo smeraldo e la giada vengono abbinate secondo reciproche affinità e sfumature di luce. Oggi Franco ha la direzione creativa del brand, seleziona le pietre seguendo il riferimento di proporzioni e colore, disegna ogni gioiello attingendo all’archivio di famiglia e proponendo nuovi spunti che partono dall’osservazione del movimento armonico come nella danza. Ma la vera sfida degli ultimi anni è “rieditare” i gioielli di famiglia, attualizzando le forme o anche utilizzando elementi, dettagli o le pietre degli stessi per regalargli una vita nuova. “Solitamente- ci racconta Franco Padiglione- dietro un gioiello storico c’è una forte componente emozionale ed è proprio su questa che puntiamo per rivoluzionarlo”. Da una spilla può prendere vita un anello e da una collana magari un bracciale, ma non solo, un elemento di pregio può essere una chiave o una moneta o un monile su cui disegnare ad hoc una nuova storia preziosa.

How would you describe your creative process in three steps?
Before the creation of a jewel, its essence must be perceived, given by the colors, by the combinations of materials and consequently by the preciousness and above all by the design. Immediately after you move on to the realization, only there you realize if what you have budgeted can be finished. The finishing is achieved with attention to detail, which make the real difference for a prestigious jewel.

Come descriveresti in tre step il tuo processo creativo?
Prima della realizzazione di un gioiello, se ne deve percepire l’essenza, data dai colori, dagli accostamenti dei materiali e di conseguenza dalla preziosità e soprattutto dal design. Subito dopo si passa alla realizzazione, solo lì ti accorgi se ciò che hai preventivato  può essere rifinito. La rifinitura si ottiene con l’attenzione dei particolari, che fanno la vera differenza per un gioiello di prestigio.

One of the characteristics of your jewels is the uniqueness in the creation. How did you refine your savoir faire?
Observing everything that surrounds us in nature is fundamental for the creation of a jewel in its uniqueness, the attention to beauty, in art and colors, over time refines that sensitivity appropriate for every inspiration.

Una delle caratteristiche dei vostri gioielli e l’unicità nella realizzazione. Come hai affinato il tuo savoir faire?
Osservare tutto ciò che ci circonda in natura è fondamentale per la realizzazione di un gioiello nella sua unicità, l’attenzione per la bellezza, nell’arte e nei colori, col tempo affina quella sensibilità opportuna per ogni ispirazione.

In your jewels there are some icons of the Venetian and Sicilian tradition such as the figure of the Moors. Do you prefer to insert anthropomorphic or natural references in your creations?
I believe that researching the culture or history of each country is the basis for every future, just as in the creation of a jewel, resuming past styles or subjects is always a good starting point. As far as we are concerned, approaching naturalistic motifs with anthropomorphic references is an excellent combination for our goldsmith art. Such as the mori earrings wrapped in shell and mother-of-pearl flowers.

Nei vostri gioielli si trovano alcune icone della tradizione veneta e siciliana come la figura dei mori. Preferisci inserire riferimenti antropomorfi o naturali nelle tue creazioni?
Credo che ricercare nella cultura o storia di ogni paese è alla base per ogni futuro, così come nella realizzazione di un gioiello, riprendere stili o soggetti passati è sempre un buon punto di inizio. Per quanto ci riguarda accostare motivi naturalistici con riferimento antropomorfi è un’ottimo connubio per la nostra arte orafa. Come ad esempio gli orecchini mori avvolti da fiori in conchiglia e madreperla.

What is the stone you feel most attracted to?
There is no stone or gem to which you are most attracted, each mineral has its own characteristics that must be enhanced and enhanced with the right precautions, there are many more or less known truly wonderful stones, it would be an understatement to dwell only on some favorite gems.

Qual è la pietra da cui ti senti più attratto?
Non c’è una pietra o gemma dalla quale si è più attratti, ogni minerale ha le sue caratteristiche che vanno esaltate e valorizzate con i giusti accorgimenti, esistono molteplici pietre più o meno conosciute davvero meravigliose, sarebbe riduttivo soffermarsi solo su alcune gemme preferite.

What kind of woman are your jewelry intended for?
The woman to whom we direct our creations is attentive to quality, details, elegance and is certainly not attracted to the mass product we are invaded by.

Qual è il genere di donna a cui sono indirizzati i vostri gioielli?
La donna alla quale indirizziamo le nostre creazioni è attenta alla qualità, ai dettagli, all’eleganza e sicuramente non è attratta dal prodotto di massa da cui siamo invasi.

Is the jewel on request or better tailored one of the challenges you prefer?
Making a jewel on request or made to measure is the basis of our job, being able to fulfill the wishes and expectations of customers is a stimulus to do better and see the amazement on their face, it is a challenge won.

Il gioiello su richiesta o meglio su misura è una delle sfide che preferisci?
Realizzare un gioiello su richiesta o su misura è alla base del nostro mestiere, riuscire ad esaudire i desideri e le aspettative dei clienti è uno stimolo per far sempre meglio e vedere lo stupore sul loro viso, è una sfida vinta.
