Tragedy struck someone she knew and she now finds herself in Malaysia, surrounded by a sisterhood who is teaching her to fight. “I wanted a break,” confesses Gita. Gita’s past seems to haunt her. Her strong pain culminates in an uncontainable struggle, in which no man, no matter how strong or experienced, can defeat her raging anger.

I AM THE BEAUTY OF YOUR BEAUTY, I AM THE FEAR OF YOUR FEAR, directed by Chui Mui Tan, is the 27th film commissioned by the Miu Miu Women’s Tales project. The acclaimed short film series invites today’s most interesting and original filmmakers to investigate themes of vanity and femininity in the 21st century.

Chui Mui Tan (born 1978) is a Malaysian film director and producer. Born in Sungai Ular, a small fishing village in Kuantan, Malaysia, Chui Mui made her debut in 2006 with Love Conquers All, which won numerous awards at film festivals around the world. Her 2021 film, Barbarian Invasion, a meditation on motherhood and identity, was nominated for Best Film at the XXIV Shanghai International Film Festival Global Earl Awards. In 2022, Chui Mui’s project, Just Because You Pressed the Shutter? won the 2022 Jimei x Arles Discovery Award.

“A Chinese girl who lands in Malaysia to search for herself, but the search can only be internal”, is how Chui Mui Tan describes her new film for Miu Miu. At one point, we see Gita spending time with an Indian flower seller, who tells her about the ancient myth of Kali, the goddess of time, destruction, death and change. “By struggling with what we fear most we find our inner strength and beauty,” explains Chui Mui Tan.

In I Am the Beauty of Your Beauty, I Am the Fear of Your Fear, Chui Mui explores the multiple meanings of “self-defense” for a woman in the modern world, plagued by constant struggles. Through her friendship and support, Gita builds her physical and spiritual power. Will she be able to free herself from her emotional burdens? And will you, instead of her, discover an unknown force probably thousands of years old?

Miu Miu Women’s Tales Miu Miu Women’s Tales is an ongoing series of unique short films, commissioned by Miu Miu and directed by the most interesting directors of the moment. They invent beautiful and strange worlds, inhabited by the idiosyncratic fantasies of women. Since 2011, twenty-seven cinematic universes have been created to date. They all share these timeless questions: How do women appear to themselves? How do they appear to others? Isn’t appearance also a political and intellectual issue, which cannot easily be separated from sensuality and pleasure? What should a woman be like today? Miu Miu asked female directors to critically investigate femininity and vanity in the 21st century.
