Fondation Louis Vuitton | New Exhibition dedicated to Mark Rothko

Rothko's constant questioning, his desire for a wordless dialogue with the viewer and his refusal to be seen as a "colourist", allow this exhibition to offer a new reading of his work in all its real plurality.

As the first retrospective in France dedicated to Mark Rothko (1903-1970) after that of the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 1999, the exhibition presented at the Fondation Louis Vuitton from 18 October 2023 brings together approximately 115 works from important institutional collections and private international ones, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the artist’s family collection and the Tate Gallery in London. Spread throughout the Fondation, the exhibition follows a chronological itinerary, tracing Rothko’s entire career, from his earliest figurative paintings to the abstraction that defines his most recent work.

“I became a painter because I wanted to elevate painting to a fundamental element like music and poetry.” Mark Rothko

Rothko’s constant questioning, his desire for a wordless dialogue with the viewer and his refusal to be seen as a “colourist”, allow this exhibition to offer a new reading of his work in all its real plurality.
