Reaffirming its commitment to the seventh art and contemporary creation, CHANEL has become a partner of the Villa Medici Film Festival for the first time. Founded in 2021 by Sam Stourdzé, director of the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici, to celebrate the relationship between contemporary art and cinema, the festival takes place from September 14th to 18th in one of the most emblematic locations in Rome.

The programme includes five days of screenings and encounters with international directors, at the end of which a Villa Medici Prize for the best film and a Jury Prize will be awarded. To celebrate the first year of this partnership, CHANEL and the Villa Medici organised a cocktail party on September 15th in the Villa Medici’s salons, followed by a screening of the film Other People’s Children by Rebecca Zlotowski in the company of the director and the writer and actress Anne Berest. The event was also attended by the actresses Rebecca Marder, Linda Caridi and Denise Tantucci, the directors Gabriele Mainetti and Andrea De Sica as well as key figures from the Italian film industry.

CHANEL and cinema
CHANEL and cinema has a longstanding history of enduring friendship, initiated by Gabrielle Chanel herself, continued by Karl Lagerfeld and now by Virginie Viard. Born at the same time as the seventh art, Gabrielle Chanel forged links with many directors such as Robert Bresson, Louis Malle, Jean Cocteau and Jean Renoir. From the golden age of Hollywood to the cutting edge of the New Wave, she designed costumes worn by Gloria Swanson for Mervyn LeRoy, by Jeanne Moreau for Antonioni and by Delphine Seyrig for Alain Resnais and François Truffaut. After dressing Stéphane Audran for Claude Chabrol over many years, Karl Lagerfeld took CHANEL into the films of Pedro Almodóvar and Olivier Assayas.

It was in Rome itself, at the legendary Cinecittà studios, that the designer chose to present the 2015/16 Métiers d’art show in a tribute to Gabrielle’s connections with Luchino Visconti and Michelangelo Antonioni. Virginie Viard, who likes to be accompanied by Sofia Coppola and the House ambassadors including Kristen Stewart, Tilda Swinton, Penélope Cruz and Marion Cotillard, recently dedicated the CHANEL Spring-Summer 2021 Ready-to-Wear collection to actresses and the world of cinema.
