From August 25 to 27, 2022, on the occasion of the Art-o-rama international contemporary art fair, the Hermès Corporate Foundation is exhibiting at the Cirva (International Center for Research on Glass and the Plastic Arts), in Marseille, the research carried out in 2021 as part of the workshop of the Academy of know-how dedicated to glass.

Launched in 2014, the Skills Academy combines knowledge sharing, transversality of practices and forward-looking research. Artisans, designers and engineers, under the educational direction of a guest designer, collectively explore a universal material by combining innovation and transmission of know-how. Dedicated to professionals, this Academy also ensures the dissemination of knowledge to as many people as possible by offering public conferences.

As part of the fifth edition of the Academy of know-how dedicated to glass, under the educational direction of designer Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, twenty-two academicians (eleven craftsmen, six designers and five engineers) met at Cirva in August and October 2021 to experiment together with ways of innovation on their favorite subject. Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance proposed to the academicians to appropriate an emblematic bottle of the Marseille city to question the notion of iconic object of the city of Marseille. The challenge: to use only, as a raw material, glass bottles, in order to register this project in a logic of reuse of an industrial object. Divided into five interdisciplinary groups, the academicians explored surprising avenues for a week.

Formal exercise in the deconstruction and fragmentation of matter: starting from a finished industrial product and transforming it into a semi-finished material with multiple potential applications. The constraint of a single material has led to a proliferation of exciting achievements. This effective demonstration of the immense potential of the glass material can be discovered at Cirva, Marseille, for three days on the occasion of the 2022 edition of the international contemporary art fair Art-o-rama.

Each edition of the Skills Academy gives rise to the publication of an encyclopedic book devoted to the material concerned, in co-publication with Actes Sud. The book Savoir & Faire: Le Verre will be available in bookstores on September 7, 2022.
