The project includes a selection of photographs, videos and performances by 11 international artists and explores the processes of research, projection and creation of possible alternative identities, poised between authentic, idealized and universal selves. By questioning gender metaphors, stereotypes, the sense of place and future perspectives, the “Role Play” artists question the notion of individuality as we know it and how it could be. Role play, the creation of alter egos and the proliferation of oneself are among the possible strategies for understanding the essence of each individual and the external image of him.

“Role Play” includes works by artists Meriem Bennani, Juno Calypso, Cao Fei, Mary Reid and Patrick Kelley, Beatrice Marchi, Darius Mikšys, Narcissister, Haruka Sakaguchi & Griselda San Martin, Tomoko Sawada, Bogosi Sekhukhuni and Amalia Ulman in one installation light conceived by the creative agency Random Studio for the two exhibition floors of the Osservatorio.

Photography, since its invention, has been one of the most suitable visual languages for investigating the other. Through different genres, from portrait, self-portrait and reportage, and alternative approaches, from storytelling to conceptual research, photography is the ideal medium for self-reflection, given its objective nature and the derived perception of authenticity. The evolution of photography, its transformation into filmic languages, the vast diffusion of online communities and virtual platforms, the future developments of the Metaverse and the consequent emergence of digital avatars have intensified the urge to explore oneself and others through the ” role-playing ”, reinforcing our obsession with alternative identities.

“Role Play” will give life to its own “alter ego” in the spaces of Prada Aoyama Tokyo in the form of another exhibition that will include works by Juno Calypso, Beatrice Marchi, Haruka Sakaguchi and Griselda San Martin, Tomoko Sawada and Bogosi Sekhukhuni. Prada will present this second exhibition project in Tokyo from 11 March to 20 June 2022, with the support of the Prada Foundation.
