“The secret of life is in art“. This was the first message contained in the show-in-a-box by JW Anderson WSS21, immediately after the outer layer of paper printed with the first pages on top of “The Importance of Being Earnest”. Both the message and the text are produced by the rebellious Irish poet and playwright of the 19th century century, Oscar Wilde.
Wilde was the inspiration for the WSS21 collection, his words and signature were the means to describe and embody the JW Anderson Oscar Wilde capsule: a mix of 4 ready to styles wear in multiple colors and accessories; including jewelry, a bag and a hat.
Jonathan Anderson, founder and creative director of JW Anderson, has always admired Oscar Wilde not only for his literary talent, but also for his audacity in being different. Wilde he was Irish, homosexual and outspoken, a rebel who defied the norms of his time. Jonathan Anderson often conceives of JW Anderson as a cultural agitator, a brand of fashion born to challenge the status quo. When Jonathan found a piece of paper at auction with the signature by Wilde and the words “The secret of life is in art ” he understood that everything had a meaning, that everything was connected.
Through the capsule collection Jonathan Anderson wanted to create something beautiful that promote that message that he finds so stimulating, thus approaching the aesthetic vision of Wilde: – beautiful things can sometimes be just beautiful -.
