The temporary exhibition ICONS OF MODERN ART – The Shchukin Collection, which will be inaugurated at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris October 22, 2016, is an ensemble, that pays homage to Sergei Shchukin, one of the greatest art collectors of the early twentieth century. Collection’s presentation of this visionary Russian businessman, is one of the most illustrious events of 2016-2017 dedicated to cultural tourism between France and Russia. From the late nineteenth century, Sergei Shchukin, an important Russian industrialist, began taking an interest in the arts melieu movement of Paris, becoming a great supporter of the current impressionism, post-impressionism and modern arts. Shchukin began to forge important friendships with modern art dealers Paul Durand-Ruel, Berthe Weill, Ambroise Vollard, Georges Bernheim, Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler and famous artists such as Monet and Matisse, which strongly influenced the choices of his collection, still considered one of the most radical of his time. Thanks to the precious contribution from the Hermitage Museum and the Pushkin State Museum, who collaborated on the project. The exhibition brings together the significant number of 160 impressionism masterpieces, post-impressionism and modern art that were part of Shchukin collection. In addition to the works of Monet, Cézanne, Gauguin, Rousseau, Derain, Matisse and Picasso, which will be devoted greater emphasis, also works of Degas, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec and Van Gogh. The exhibition project, carried out by the Fondation Louis Vuitton, represents the first time that a collection of such fundamental importance in the history of modern art will be presented outside of Russia (the Pushkin museum held an exhibition in tribute to the Shchukin collection in 2004). The project focuses on the story of the genesis of modern art and the upheavals that marked the period between 1890 and 1914, when the collection was created. The original point of view of Shchukin, who so strongly influenced the character of his collection, will be one of the main themes explored by this exhibition. In order to meet the broad scope of the subject, its size and the particularity of the Shchukin collection, but also in order to provide the best conditions designed to welcome visitors as possible, the Fondation Louis Vuitton has decided to dedicate the entire space of ‘ Frank Gehry building, inaugurated in October 2014, in this exceptional project. The 160 selected works will be displayed in an area of ​​almost 2,400 square meters on four levels. The exhibition will include all areas of the Fondation Louis Vuitton designed by the famous American architect Frank Gehry, with a number of entities organically connected by a network of stairs, galleries, balconies and terraces. The exhibition will be fully integrated into the architectural walk of the Foundation and will be engaging with the monumental work in situ by Daniel Buren, which opened in May 2016. For this occasion, the Fondation Louis Vuitton has created an ad hoc cultural program, focused on dance and music, that will be the witness to the artistic dialogue of the early twentieth century between France and Russia, which still exists thanks to contemporary creations. In addition to the production of a dedicated catalog, the Fondation Louis Vuitton is organizing, in February 2017, a symposium aimed at the scientific review that will bring together the international community of researchers who will study the role of the great collectors of modern art and contemporary art of the nineteenth and twentieth century. The exhibition, the cultural program and the scientific direction of the catalog have been entrusted to Anne Baldassarri. The entire project was realized thanks to the invaluable support of the grandson of Shchukin, Andre-Marc Delocque Fourcaud, labor expert of his ancestor and historical consultant of the exhibition, Marina Loshak D., Director of the State Museum Pushkin and Mikhail B. Pitrovky, Director of the Hermitage Museum. ICONS OF MODERN ART – The Shchukin Collection marks an official partnership, signed February 10, 2016, between the Fondation Louis Vuitton, the Hermitage and the Pushkin State Museum, and strengthens long-term collaboration between the Hermitage and the Pushkin State Museum, which began in 2015 on the occasion of the exhibition the Keys of Passion.

La mostra temporanea ICONS OF MODERN ART – The Shchukin Collection, che verrà inaugurata alla Fondation Louis Vuitton a Parigi il 22 ottobre 2016, è una corale che rende omaggio a Sergei Shchukin, uno dei più grandi collezionisti d’arte dei primi anni del XX Secolo. La presentazione della collezione di questo visionario imprenditore russo, costituisce uno degli eventi più illustri dell’anno 2016-2017 dedicato al turismo culturale fra Francia e Russia. Dalla fine del XIX Secolo, Sergei Shchukin, un importantissimo industriale russo, incominciò ad appassionarsi al movimento delle arts melieu di Parigi, diventando un grande sostenitore delle correnti impressionista, post-impressionista e delle arti moderne. Shchukin iniziò a stringere importanti amicizie con i mercanti d’arte moderna Paul Durand-Ruel, Berthe Weill, Ambroise Vollard, Georges Bernheim, Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler e celeberrimi artisti del calibro di Monet e Matisse, che influenzarono fortemente la scelta delle opere della sua collezione, considerata ancora oggi una delle più radicali del suo tempo. Grazie al prezioso contruibuto del Museo Hermitage e del Museo Statale Pushkin, che hanno collaborato alla realizzazione del progetto, la mostra raccoglie il significativo numero di 160 capolavori impressionisti, post-impressionisti e moderni che erano parte della Collezione Shchukin. Oltre ai lavori di Monet, Cézanne, Gaugin, Rousseau, Derain, Matisse e Picasso, a cui sarà dedicata maggiore enfasi, verranno presentate anche opere di Degas, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec e Van Gogh. Il progetto espositivo, portato avanti dalla Fondation Louis Vuitton, rappresenta la prima volta in cui una collezione di una tale importanza fondamentale nella storia dell’arte moderna sarà presentata al di fuori della Russia (il museo Pushkin tenne una mostra in omaggio alla collezione Shchukin nel 2004). Il progetto si concentra sulla narrazione della genesi dell’arte moderna e gli sconvolgimenti che segnarono il periodo tra il 1890 ed il 1914, quando la collezione fu creata. Il punto di vista originale di Shchukin, che così fortemente influenzò il carattere della sua collezione, sarà uno dei temi principali esplorati da questa mostra. Al fine di rispondere all’ampia portata del soggetto, alle sue dimensioni ed alla particolarità della collezione Shchukin, ma anche al fine di fornire le migliori condizioni volte ad accogliere più visitatori possibili, la Fondation Louis Vuitton ha deciso di dedicare tutto lo spazio dell’edificio Frank Gehry, inaugurato nel mese di ottobre 2014, a questo eccezionale progetto. Le 160 opere selezionate verranno visualizzate in un area di quasi 2.400 mq distribuiti su quattro livelli. La mostra includerà tutti gli spazi della Fondation Louis Vuitton disegnata dal famoso architetto americano Frank Gehry, con una serie di entità organicamente collegate mediante una rete di scale, gallerie, balconi e terrazze. La mostra sarà pienamente integrata nella passeggiata architettonica della Fondazione e dialogherà con la monumentale opera in situ di Daniel Buren, inaugurata nel maggio 2016. Per questa occasione, la Fondation Louis Vuitton ha creato un programma culturale ad hoc, focalizzato sulla danza e sulla musica, che farà da testimone al dialogo artistico degli inizi del XX Secolo fra Francia e Russia, che ancora oggi esiste grazie alle creazioni contemporanee. Oltre alla produzione di un catalogo dedicato, la Fondation Louis Vuitton organizzerà, nel Febbraio 2017, un simposio rivolto alla revisione scientifica che riunirà la comunità internazionale di ricercatori che studieranno il ruolo dei grandi collezionisti di opere di arte moderna e contemporanea del XIX e XX Secolo. La mostra, il programma culturale e la direzione scientifica del catalogo sono stati affidati ad Anne Baldassarri. L’intero progetto è stato realizzato grazie al prezioso supporto del nipote di Shchukin, André-Marc Delocque Fourcaud, esperto del lavoro del suo antenato e consulente storico della mostra, di Marina D. Loshak, Direttore del Museo Statale Pushkin e di Mikhail B. Pitrovky, Direttore del Museo Hermitage. ICONS OF MODERN ART – The Shchukin Collection segna una partnership ufficiale, siglata il 10 febbraio 2016, fra la Fondation Louis Vuitton, il Museo dell’Hermitage e il Museo Statale Pushkin, e rafforza la collaborazione a lungo termine fra il Museo dell’Hermitage e il Museo Statale Pushkin, iniziata nel 2015 in occasione della mostra Le Chiavi di una Passione.
