5 Things You Need to Know About Dressing Your Groomsmen

Dressing your groomsmen can be a complicated task – should they match or not? How much money will they be happy to spend? How do I make them feel comfortable whilst fitting in with the theme? Here are five of my most important tips for a cohesive but stylish set of groomsmen.

Consider Their Personal Style…

Of course, your wedding is about, well, you. But don’t use that as an excuse to be a groomzilla and make your groomsmen wear hideous outfits. They don’t necessarily all have to pick their own outfits, although offering them a clothing range or even colour and letting them pick from those options is a non-traditional trend of late that works great if you have lots of friends who are on a budget, but at least offer them something stylish to wear. That doesn’t mean they should be out-dressing you, it just means they won’t stick out like a sore thumb in the wedding photos.

…But Set Rules

Even though you want your groomsmen to be more mismatched, or are comfortable letting them choose their own outfits for the wedding, it’s still a good idea to give some styling guidelines such as staying in one colour family or within one style. If Fred loves red and Hugh picks blue and you happen to be wearing a pink tie, well, all of your wedding photos will then be extremely mismatched, which is only okay if you’ve purposefully planned a rainbow wedding.

Get Choosy With the Details

If you aren’t going for the mismatch look on your wedding day, at least get specific when it comes to accessories. If you’re choosing a suit from formaltailor.com for all of your groomsmen to wear you won’t need to worry as much, but otherwise it doesn’t hurt to at least ask your special guests to wear matching ties or shoes. This will give a look of unity to their unique outfits.

Don’t Bankrupt Your Guests

Everyone loves the way they look in an Armani suit, but that doesn’t mean they’ll love the way the money looks as it flies out of their wallet. Be considerate of your groomsmen. They probably expect to dish out a little bit of cash for their outfit, but keep it within budget. You could even ask them personally how much they’d be willing to spend if that is something your friend group is comfortable talking about; that way you can keep the price in a place that pleases everyone.

Show Appreciation

Show appreciation for your groomsmen by offering them personalized gifts to pair with their outfits. Engraved cufflinks with their monograms is a popular gift to get, but you could even get them special flasks, pocket squares, or tie clips. This is a great way to add some style and originality to the outfits while showing some of the most important people in your life how much you appreciate them being there.

So there you have it! Here are my top five tips for dressing your groomsmen, and dealing with any style or budget problems that might be of concern. Now it’s time to get married and party! Good luck!
