Quando hai deciso di diventare un designer?
Credo sia stato quando ho concluso il primo anno di lezioni al Polimoda, la scuola che ho frequentato.
Io diciannovenne siciliana ero entrata a stretto contatto con una realtà d’avanguardia, mi sentivo così motivata a voler spingermi sempre oltre, finalmente facevo delle cose che mi stimolavano e che accrescevano la mia conoscenza.
Quest’ambiente culturale mi ha aiutato realmente a capire giorno dopo giorno di voler appartenere al mondo della moda, fatto di creazione e ricerca, e con il passare del tempo il sogno si è definito sempre più.
Era il lavoro che sognavi?
Si, decisamente si, non saprei fare altro che abiti, i miei abiti però.
Perché si può lavorare come designer anche in un ufficio stile per clienti esterni, o far parte di un processo produttivo di una grande multinazionale, anche questo è fare moda anche questo è essere una designer. Solo che è un po’ diverso quando sei tu a capo di tutto. Tutto questo per dire che io faccio il lavoro che sognavo solo dal 2013, anno in cui ho avuto il coraggio di dare le dimissioni da una grande azienda per lavorare al mio brand, al mio sogno, ho definito la mia identità di designer, e da poco meno di un anno sono rientrata qui a Palermo, perché quel sogno stava crescendo, e sono convinta che “casa” sia l’unico posto dove voglio costruire qualcosa di grande.
Qual è la prima cosa che hai creato e per chi?
Se devo partire da principio parlerei del guardaroba delle mie barbie e di tutti gli strofinacci rubati in casa per creare gli outfit più belli… Se invece devo fare un discorso serio dico nel 2013, lavoravo ancora in azienda e ho progettato e realizzato il mio primo vero abito da sposa, per una mia carissima amica, il divertimento nel condividere quel momento con lei, tutte le fasi di progettazione, dalla scelta delle linee guida alla scelta dei materiali, fino alla realizzazione è stata la spinta finale a farmi credere che avrei potuto scommettere su di me.
Si sa che spesso le riviste e la stampa in generale fanno dei paragoni con i designer più famosi per spiegare una collezione di un designer, qual è il designer a cui ti piacerebbe essere paragonato?
Wow essere paragonata ad un colosso? Cosi per parlare direi… Cristobal Balenciaga, perché nei suoi abiti oltre all’estro creativo io vedo la forte tecnica e la ricerca modellistica, oggi questo tipo di stile lo ritrovo nel contemporaneo Delpozo, newentry nella mia top ten di stilisti preferiti.
Mentre per la filosofia, per il suo modus operandi e l’impatto artistico penso ad Antonio Marras, per me un maestro, che guardo con ammirazione, e grandissimo rispetto. Anche lui nella sua isola, anche lui un testardo visionario.
Quando disegni un abito qual è l’icona di femminilità/la tua musa?
Penso alla donna contemporanea che vorrei essere, che tutte le donne come me vorrebbero essere. Dinamica, fresca, che sa quello che vuole, che osa ma con discrezione, composta ed elegante, che ama mostrare la sua femminilità, una donna che viene ricordata insomma.
Amo gli anni ‘40 dopo i tempi bui della guerra la donna ritorna a voler apparire femminile, quegli anni sono per me eleganza pura, sono linee semplici, pulite ma estremamente chic, nella mia capsule collection ho voluto contestualizzare questa epoca che mi caratterizza molto.
Se dovessi creare una collezione usando un solo colore, quale sarebbe e perché?
Senza dubbio il bianco, in tutte le sue tonalità, perché principalmente mi occupo di abiti per eventi importanti, e l’abito da sposa è l’abito importante per eccellenza, che ogni donna si concede anche solo per un giorno, e in quel giorno vuole apparire al meglio.
A chi fai vedere i primi bozzetti di una collezione?
A nessuno, fino a quando non definisco bene le linea guida della collezione, resta tutto nella mia testa, poi appena il progetto prende forma e capisco anche come realizzare quello che voglio, sono pronta a mettermi in gioco, a confrontarmi. E il primo con cui mi confronto è Giuseppe, il mio socio e compagno.
Il materiale che ami di più…la seta, il cotone, il velluto…e perché?
Quando scelgo i tessuti mi concentro sulla resa del materiale, amo i tessuti cadenti, spesso li uso in sbieco per renderli ancora più fluttuanti, mi piacciono i tessuti leggeri, increspati e operati ton sur ton, prediligo le fibre naturali come la seta e il cotone, ma adoro anche la viscosa che è una fibra artificiale, attenzione artificiale non significa sintetica, significa lavorata con processo chimico, oggi c’è molta attenzione verso la ricerca tessile, che propone tantissimi tessuti artificiali, e alcuni hanno una resa veramente fantastica.
Se i tuoi abiti avessero una colonna sonora, quale artista vorresti che la scrivesse?
Bella domanda, in questo momento sono in fissa con Florence and the machine, che ha accompagnato la creazione della mia Capsule Collection, la musica è fondamentale nel mio quotidiano, mi rilassa e mi ispira tantissimo, nella mia playlist però riesco a passare da Mozart ai Chemical Brothers…
Qual è il trucco che usi per superare il momento del foglio bianco? guardi un film, sfogli un libro o…
Stacco, esco, faccio una passeggiata, incontro altre persone, la cosa importante è sganciarmi per un po’ da quello che “non sto facendo”. Il processo creativo non si comanda, riesco a stare giorni senza produrre nulla e poi in un pomeriggio la collezione è fatta.
Se non facessi il designer quale lavoro nel mondo della moda ti piacerebbe fare e perché?
Farei la stylist, senza dubbio, mi piace molto il momento dello shooting, creare ambientazioni e curare ogni dettaglio, fare ricerca, studiare gli abbinamenti, lo trovo un lavoro molto interessante. L’esperienza sui set è stata una grande scuola, e oggi quando lavoro ai miei shooting sono molto esigente e precisa per riuscire ad ottenere da tutti quello che voglio.

When you’ve decided to become a designer?
I think it was when I finished the first year of classes at Polimoda, the fashion school that I attended . I was a nineteen years old Sicilian who came in close contact with an avant-garde reality , I felt so motivated and i always wanted to go further and pursue the things that stimulated me and that only increased my knowledge .
This cultural environment helped me really understand, day after day, that i wanted to be part of the fashion world , a world made up of creation and research , and with the time passing by my dream took shape more and more.
It was the job you dreamed of ?
Yes, definitely yes , I could not do anything but clothes…MY clothes!
Because you can work as a designer even in a design department for external customers , or be part of a production process of a large multinational company , this is being a fashion designer too. Things are a little bit different when you’re in charge of everything. I can say that I’m doing the job I dreamed of only from 2013 , when I had the courage to resign from a great company to work on my brand , my dream , I defined my identity as a designer , and after little less than a year I came back in Palermo (my hometown) , because that dream was growing fast and I am convinced that ” home” is the only place where I want to build something great.
What is the first thing that you have created, and for whom?
If I have to speak from the beginning…i would say the wardrobe of my Barbies and all the clothes i stole at home to create the most beautiful outfits … If we’re having a serious talk, it was in 2013 , I was still working in a company and I designed and built my first real wedding dress , for a dear friend of mine , and it was pure fun to share that moment with her, all the stages of design , from the choice of guidelines and the choice of materials…all of this made me realize that I could bet on me and build my own brand.
We know that often the magazines and the press in general make comparisons with famous designers to explain a collection of a new designer , what is the designer that you’d like to be compared with?
Wow being compared to a “giant” ? I would say Cristobal Balenciaga , because in his clothes you can see and feel both the creative fantasy as well as the strong technical and research work , today i find this kind of style in Delpozo, new entry in my top ten of favorite designers .
As for philosophy , for its modus operandi and the artistic impact he’s made on fashion I would think of Antonio Marras , for me is a “maestro” a master , I look at him with admiration and great respect . He’s strongly connected with his island and he’s a stubborn visionary…like me.
When you design a dress which is the icon of femininity you’ve in mind/ which is your muse ?
I think of the contemporary woman I want to be , that all women like me want to be like. Dynamic , cool , who knows what she wants, composed and elegant , who loves to show her femininity , a woman who is always remembered in fact.
I love the 40s, after the war’s darkest times the woman started wanting to appear feminine, those years for me mean pure elegance , the lines are simple , clean but extremely chic , in my capsule collection I wanted to contextualize this era that characterizes me a lot.
If you had to create a collection using only one color , what would it be and why ?
Undoubtedly i would choose white, in all its shades , mainly because I design and create clothes for important events (i.e. weddings), the wedding dress is “the” important cloth for excellence, that every woman is also granted even just for one day, and on that day she wants to look at their best .
Who’s the one who see the first sketches of a collection?
No one, until i define the guidelines of the collection , it is all in my head , then as soon as the project takes shape and i also understand how to achieve what I want , I’m ready to confront and to show them to someone. The first person is Joseph, my partner and companion.
The material you love the most … silk, cotton , velvet … and why?
When I choose the fabrics I focus on how the material works…I love the falling fabrics , i often use them on the bias to make them even more volatile , i like light fabrics , crinkled and operated ton sur ton , I prefer natural fibers such as silk and cotton but I also love the viscose which is a man-made fiber , artificial doesn’t mean synthetic, it means processed with chemical process , nowadays there is a lot of attention to the textile research , which offers plenty of artificial tissues , and some have a really fantastic performance.
If your clothes had a soundtrack, which artist would you choose?
Good question , right now i’m obsessed with Florence and the Machine , who accompanied the creation of my capsule collection , music is fundamental in my daily life , it relaxes and inspires me a lot, in my playlist you can switch from Mozart to Chemical Brothers …
What is the trick you use to overcome the “blank page” moment?
I go out , I take a walk , meet other people , the important thing is to unhook a bit from what “I’m not doing” 🙂 . You cannot control the creative process, i can have several days without producing anything , and then in one afternoon the collection is made.
If you were not a designer which work in the fashion world would you do and why?
I would be the stylist , no doubt , I really like “shooting time” , i like to create environments and take care of every detail , doing research , studying the pairings , I find it a very interesting job . The experience on the set was a great school , and today when I work on my shooting i’m very demanding and precise to be able to get all what I want from everyone on set.
