Come hai iniziato il tuo lavoro di model scout?

Quando ero un ragazzo collezionavo riviste di moda e di arte e questo credo abbia allenato il mio “occhio”, così ero sempre super aggiornato su quello che era “hot” e su dove andava il mercato della moda e cosa richiedeva.

Mi piaceva scattare foto e cercavo sempre volti interessanti, così dopo che mia sorella e le sue amiche ne avevano avuto abbastanza di farmi da modelle…ho dovuto cercare nuove “vittime” he he he

Un giorno ho visto una ragazza fantastica mentre camminavo per strada, si chiamava Korinna…ero nervosissimo e timido ma riuscii a chiederle se avrebbe voluto farmi da modella…Dopo riuscii a farla assumere in un’agenzia di modelle, poi trovai un’altra ragazza e poi un’altra e tutto andava per il meglio e riuscivano a lavorare per clienti molto importanti. 

Dopo aver lavorato con successo come scout, il mio amico e ora business partner Jan Eric mi incoraggiò e mi spinse a provare a fondare la mia agenzia di modelle e ora…17 anni dopo siamo qui a lavorare ogni giorno per la nostra agenzia Place Models.

Raccontaci della tua prima “scoperta”?

Come ti accennavo prima la mia prima esperienza è qualcosa che non dimenticherò mai…la ragazza proveniva da una famiglia molto umile e che non aveva nessuna familiarità con il mondo della moda e della agenzie di modelle, in qualche modo era una “ghetto” girl. Era bellissima, un angelo…dopo averle fatto delle foto il suo primo lavoro professionale fu per Vogue Italia con Paolo Roversi.

Quali sono le principali caratteristiche per diventare una modella, cosa ti colpisce immediatamente e cosa fa la differenza?

Le sensazioni sono tante…il mio cuore batte più velocemente e in qualche modo sento la necessità di mettere questa persona davanti all’obbiettivo della macchina fotografica…deve avere un look interessante, zigomi, occhi grandi, un collo lungo e una bella bocca…e qualcosa che è differente da quello che ci si aspetta…qualcosa di inedito e che costringe chi la guarda a soffermarsi più di qualche secondo davanti alla foto. Forse non qualcosa che tutti troverebbero bello ma qualcosa che elevi una sua foto a qualcosa di vicino all’arte.

La cosa più divertente e quella meno divertente che ti capitano nel lavoro?

Dopo tutti questi anni come agente hai migliaia di esperienze…diverenti e meno divertenti…forse quelle meno divertenti sono più numerose…Una cosa che non mi dimenticherò mai è quando sono stato invitato per la prima volta a un grande party durante la fashion week. Era la prima volta che incontravo persone come Naomi Campbell, Bruce Willis, Gisele Bündchen, Karen Elson, Keanu Reeves…tutti mi salutavano in moto molto normale come se ci conoscessimo…la cosa mi sconvolse a tal punto che una volta in bagno scoppiai a piangere…ha ha

La cosa meno divertente in assoluto e quando una modella perde un volo, quando le modelle hanno un booking importante e devo cancellare l’impegno per colpa della scuola o di un’influenza…

Un’altra cosa che odio è quando scatto delle foto o dei video per le new face, le foto sono stupende e poi capita qualcosa alla memory card della macchina e perdo tutto il materiale…arghh!

Di sicuro puoi scoprire una modella anche in fila al supermercato ma non è certo facile, quali sono le nazioni dove statisticamente si trovano più ragazze che possono diventare modelle?

Incontro tutte le modelle che scopro al supermarket…per strada, sul treno o in metropolitana, nei negozi…di solito accade sempre nel weekend quando non lavoro in agenzia…Di sicuro le nazioni più a nord si trovano ragazzi e ragazze più alti e questo è un buon punto di partenza, ma trovo che tutte le nazioni hanno persone belle e credo fermamente che l’industria della moda debba dare pari opportunità a tutte le razze.

Negli ultimi anni abbiamo visto sfilare modelle sempre più giovani, quale pensi sia l’eta ideale per cominciare?

Penso che l’età giusta sia non prima dei 16 anni, sono completamente contrario a fare lavorare modelle troppo giovani, a volte di 14 anni.

Quale modella avresti voluto scoprire?

Amo Cindy Crawford e Patti Hansen.

Che ne pensi delle modelle che poi diventano attrici, ultimo esempio Cara Delevingne?

Penso sia molto triste vedere tutte le critiche che ricevono le modelle che fanno anche altri lavori, come recitare ad esempio…Le modelle hanno tantissima esperienza che sviluppano attraverso gli shooting e confrontandosi con il team di lavoro…lavorano quando fa caldo e quando fa freddo, viaggiano in tantissime nazioni. Incontrano per lavoro tantissime persone e ascoltano un sacco di storie da ognuna di loro, esperienze e bagagli emozionali che possono essere usati nella recitazione. Per quanto mi riguarda le modelle che ho visto recitare hanno fatto un ottimo lavoro, così perchè no? Gli attori d’altro canto fanno un sacco di lavori che dovrebbero fare le modelle…

Cosa consiglieresti a coloro che vogliono iniziare a fare la modella?

Trovare un’agenzia con cui si sentono a loro agio e al sicuro e con cui possono parlare e confrontarsi su tutto. Fare la modella è un lavoro e devi avere tutti i vantaggi e benefici che esso comporta.

Poi devi essere sempre puntuale, rispettare chi lavora con te, essere amichevoli, chiacchierare con chi ti sta intorno, essere professionale e mantenerti sempre in ottima salute e in forma.

Fare la modella è un lavoro che devi amare e che ti deve divertire fare. Se qualcuno lo fa solo per i soldi presto diventerà una frustrazione continua.

Ci saranno momenti difficili, in cui ti sentirai sola o ti mancherà la tua famiglia e gli amici, una modella quindi deve essere forte emotivamente e non prendere mai le critiche sul personale…

Quello che le modelle fanno e quello che le persone vedono come risultato in una sola foto è un lavoro di un team…la parola chiave è lavoro di squadra. Dobbiamo ringraziare i fotografi, produttori, stylist, make up artist, post produzione, model agency, assistenti…Credo che un semplice ma sentito grazie a tutto il team di uno shooting fotografico faccia durare di più la carriera di una modella. 

How did you get into the modeling talent scout ?

Since I was very young I collected fashion and art magazines so i think I “trained“ my eye very early  and i was always up to date regarding what is hot now and what the fashion market needs.

I loved shooting pictures of interesting faces, so after my sister and my friends had enough of me asking them all the time to shoot them, I needed to find new “ victims..” he he

One day I saw an amazing interesting girl on the street, her name was Korinna .. I was so nervous and shy but I had to ask her if she would like to model for me..

I placed her with a model agency, then I found a second girl, a third girl.. all did really well, worked for high level clients.

After having success as a scout ,  my friend and business partner now Jan Eric encourage me to try to make our own agency.. and here we are, already 17 years with our model agency Place Models.

Tell us about the first experience, your first “discovered” ?

As I wrote before, my first big scouting experience is something I will never forget, as the girl came from a very poor family, they had no idea reg fashion, model agencies, this was somehow a “ ghetto “ girl. Looking like an angel..  After I shot her 2-3 times, her first job was Italian Vogue with Paolo Roversi…

What are the main characteristics to be a model or template, what strikes you immediately, what makes the difference ?

I feel my heart moving very fast, it´s somehow a need, that i need to get this person somehow in front of my camera, the person needs to have an interesting look, cheekbones, big eyes, long neck, full lips…

And something which is different than expected…Something which makes the viewer hold his eyes more than some seconds on the picture . Not maybe what everybody call beautiful but somebody who makes a picture “art”…

The most fun and less funny that happened to you during your work ?

After so many years, you have as a model agent so many experiences… funn and less funny…I think, the less funny are more…

Something I will never forget, was my first time being invited to a huge fashion party during fashion week.  I met for the first time people like Naomi Campbell, Bruce Willis, Gisele Bündchen, Karen Elson, Keanu Reeves…And  they said hi to me on a very normal way.. this was too much for me…I went to the bathroom and I cried from excitement…ha ha…

Less funny is when model miss their flight, When models get great bookings and then I need to cancel because of school or because somebody got sick…

And less funny is, when I shoot pictures and video of new faces, the pictures are great and then somethings happens with the memory stick of the camera and I loose pictures…then I can die…

Surely you can meet a future model also in line at the supermarket, but it is not easy, what are the countries where the rate there are more girls who become models ?

I met all the models I scouted in the super market,  on streets, metro train, shops…and this is always weekends, when I don’t work in the agency… Sure in northern countries the people are taller and is a bit easier , but I think every country has beautiful people , and I believe the fashion industry should give the same chances to all races.

In recent years we see more and more young models on the catwalks, what do you think is the right age to start?

The right age to start to develop as a model should never be younger than 16. I am totally against sending 14 years young girls to do fashion shows.

Which model would you have liked to find first ?

I love Cindy Crawford and Patti Hansen .

What do you think of the models that become actresses, such as Cara Delevingne ?

It´s sad that people envy models who also try other challenges…Models have already a lot  of experience about shootings and communication with a team, they shoot when it´s hot, when it´s cold, they travel in so many countries. Meeting so many people through the work as a model, u hear so many stories of each person which u can use as an actor. The most of the models I saw in movies did a good job, so why not ?

Many actors do also a lot of jobs models should do… 

What would you recommend to those who would like to start this work ?

To find an agency they feel comfortable and safe with and they can communicate for everything. Modeling is a job, you need to have all the advantages / benefits you need anyway in life.

Being on time, respect the people, being friendly, enjoying small talk, being professional plus looking good and healthy and on a good shape.  

Modeling is a job u need to love and enjoy.

If someone does it only for the money, this will become frustration. There always hard times, times u are lonely and u miss ur family and friends, So a model needs to be emotional strong and never takes things personally …
