Interview with the designer Nadya Dzyak    

Quando e come hai deciso che saresti diventata una stilista?

Sin dall’infanzia sapevo che sarei voluta diventare una stilista, ho sempre amato la moda, creavo i miei look per ogni stagione, ero abbonata a magazine di moda stranieri. Cercavo di vivere e assorbire moda dovunque ne trovassi traccia. Quando ero ancora a scuola andavo a vedere la fashion week Ucraina e sognavo che un giorno quella passerella e quelle modelle avrebbero indossato i miei abiti.

Era il lavoro che sognavi di fare?

Si e sono fortunata a poterlo dire, creare abiti è la mia vita e la mia passione e a dire il vero mi viene difficile immaginare a cosa sarei potuta diventare se non fossi stata una stilista.

Qual è la prima cosa che hai creato e per chi?

La mia prima creazione l’ho realizzata quando avevo 11 anni…beh a dire il vero ho ridisegnato e rimodellato un vestito di mio padre e ne ho fatto una gonna e un gilet :-)…era molto difficile trovare qualcosa di unico e che mi piacesse!

Qual è il designer che ammiri di più e perchè?

Raf Simons and Alber Elbaz, ho amato da sempre il loro lavoro e credo che adesso sia iniziato per entrambi un periodo molto interessante della loro carriera, la grandissima attenzione data alla notizia del loro abbandono di case famose come Lanvin e Dior potrebbe dare inizio a un nuovo ed emozionante periodo per tutta l’industria della moda.

Qual è la tua musa, la tua icona quando crei un abito?

Non posso dire di avere un’icona…intendo una sola. Ammiro moltissime donne, il loro carattere, la loro bellezza e i loro modi, la loro forza e le loro debolezze. Se dovessi descrivere la donna che indossa i miei abiti, dovrebbe essere femminile in ogni momento, non importa se indossa i tacchi, le sneaker o degli stivali, deve comunque venire fuori la sua attitude e la sua femminilità.

Se dovessi disegnare un’intera collezione usando solo un colore, quale sceglieresti e perché?

Sceglierei il nero, è un colore unico e universale e può essere usato per mostrare ogni tessuto, texture e mood.

Chi è la prima persona a cui mostri i tuoi bozzetti?

All’inizio della mia carriera, li mostravo sempre a mia madre e il suo supporto e il suo aiuto mi hanno sempre aiutato. Oggi ho un team con cui lavoro e condivido le mie idee prima di tutti con loro.

Il materiale o tessuto che ami di più e perchè?

Mi piace molto lavorare con la seta e con il jacquard (quello più spesso) che mantiene molto la forma, usando entrambi i materiali posso creare nuove e interessanti forme, penso sia molto interessante poter lavorare con texture differenti per creare i look.

Se i tuoi abiti avessero una colonna sonora, che canzoni sceglieresti?

Difficilissimo da dire, ogni volta è una colonna sonora differente, per questa collezione la colonna sonora perfetta è un disco dei Blondie.

Hai qualche trucco per superara l’empasse della pagina bianca, quel momento all’inizio del lavoro per una nuova collezione?

Non saprei dire se faccio qualcosa per trovare l’ispirazione, di solito viene da se…disegnare una collezione è un procedimento molto emozionale, in cui le emozioni possono nascere anche da cose semplicissime…di solito mi segno alla scrivania e inizio a lavorare e tutti i pezzi del puzzle arrivano uno dopo l’altro.

Se non fossi una stilista quale altro lavoro nel mondo della moda ti piacerebbe fare e perché?

Come ho detto prima non saprei cosa sarei diventata…di sicuro preferirei fare un lavoro comunque creativo…la fotografa, di sicuro vorrei fare la fotografa di moda.

Above pictures are from SS 2016 collection. The collection synthesizes the heritage of the western fashion of the 80s-90s of the previous century and the works of Ukrainian artist Maria Korshun.

The 80s-90s can be characterized as the period of substantial changes in the culture and the society: development of informational technologies, outburst of the political correctness and the new Y Generation, as well as new wave of music performers – all those factors significantly influenced the formation of the unique fashion esthetics of that time and set the formation of the digital romantic futurism esthetics.

Elegance along with non-formal, evident eroticism of clothes along with military, specific color family and ironic spirit – all these key style peculiarities have found their up-to-date interpretation in summer collection by Nadya Dzyak.

When and how you decided that you wanted to be a designer?

Since my childhood I knew that I would become a designer. I’ve always loved fashion, I tried to create my own looks for every season, I was subscribing foreign fashion magazines, in general I absorbed fashion from everywhere I could. I remember how being a student I attended the first shows on Ukrainian Fashion Week. Then I said to myself that one day there will be models in my clothes on that catwalk.

It was your dream job?

I’m lucky to say it is my dream job. For me creating clothes is my life and my passion. And it’s hard to say whom else could I become.  

Which is the first thing you designed and for who (yourself,a friend…)?

I designed my first thing when I was 11 years old. Well, actually I redesigned my father’s suit and made myself a vest and a skirt. ☺ To be honest it was hard to find some kind of unique, modern clothes that time. 

Who’s the designer you admire the most and why?

Raf Simons and Alber Elbaz – I have always admired their work. I think that now there has started a special and interesting period of their career. The high attention of the world to their decision to leave such giants as Dior and Lanvin could mean the beginning of a new and exciting period in the whole fashion industry. 

Who’s your muse, your icon, when you create a dress?

I can not say that I really have that one and only icon. I admire so many women, their characters, their beauty, manners and behavior, their strengths and weaknesses. As for me, whatever a woman does she should be feminine. No matter whether she wears heals, sneakers or boots, it comes out of her attitude.  

If you had to design an entire collection using just one color, which is the one you’d pick and why?

I would choose black. It is a unique and universal color, it can be used to show any texture and mood.

Who’s the first person you show your sketches to?

At the beginning of my career I used to show all sketches of my future collections to my mother. And her support and faith always helps me. Today I have a team which I’m working with and I share all my ideas with them.

The fabric you love the most…silk, lace, velvet and why?

I really enjoy working with silk and thick jacquard fabrics that keep their shapes. With the help of them I can create new interesting shapes, I think it’s very exciting to work with different textures; it gives you more options for creating looks.

If your clothes had a soundtrack, which songs you’d choose?

It’s so hard to say, because each time it’s different. This time I have chosen the music Blondie
because it gives the fleur of carelessness to the collection.

Do you have any trick to avoid that “blank page” moment when you’re at the beginning of the designing of a new collection? Do you watch a movie, flip an old magazine…

I can’t say that I do some certain things to find inspiration. Usually it just comes by itself, I might say “out of nowhere”. Creation of collections is a very emotional process for me, so that time I can find inspiration even in very simple things. I just sit down and start my work and all the pieces come together.

If you weren’t a designer which job in the fashion world you would like to do and why?

As I have said, I can’t even imagine what I would become. But still I think I would prefer some kind of creative job such as a photographer, and I would definetly become a fashion photographer.
