Intervista con il Jewelry Designer Mario Salvucci 
– Quando e come hai deciso che saresti diventato un designer?
E’ cominciato tutto per caso negli anni 70 quando avevo 16 anni e ho iniziato a fare dei gioielli per me e le mie amiche, da lì è nata una passione che ho coltivato e approfondito facendo l’apprendista per un vecchio orafo della mia città che mi ha insegnato il mestiere. Designer lo sono diventato qualche anni dopo quando a 23 anni mi sono trasferito a NY e ho lanciato la mia prima collezione.
– È sempre stato il lavoro dei tuoi sogni?
Si certo ho sempre cercato di vivere del mio lavoro creativo e a NY negli anni ’80 ho realizzato questo sogno.
– Qual è la prima cosa che hai progettato e per chi (te stesso, un amico …)?
Il primo vero e proprio gioiello è stato un anello in oro per mia madre quando facevo l’apprendista orafo.
– Chi è il designer che ammiri di più e perché?
Domanda difficile ! Da quando lavoro nel campo della moda ce ne sono stati tanti…..…..al momento ammiro molto il lavoro di Iris Van Herpen per la creatività, innovazione, ricerca e perché anche lei prende ispirazione dalla Natura.
– Chi è la tua musa, l’icona, quando crei un gioiello?
Qualche anno fa ho deciso di tornare a fare gioielli dopo 10 anni di pausa e il primo gioiello l’ho creato pensando a Diane Pernet, una carissima amica dai tempi di NY quando disegnavo gli accessori per le sue collezioni di moda.
Ho realizzato una grande spilla a forma di ragno in argento ossidato con un onice sfaccettato nero, l’ho chiamata la Vedova Nera e da questo pezzo è partita la collezione Incredible Creatures e la spilla, più altre che sono venute dopo, è rimasta nel look quotidiano di Diane ed è ora anche un ciondolo che decora le bottiglie dei suoi profumi. Mi piacciono gioielli che hanno una storia, un significato, un riferimento, ogni forma ha un significato profondo.
– Se dovessi progettare un intera collezione utilizzando un solo colore o materiale, quale sceglieresti e perché?
Amo lavorare con l’argento. Lo sento come il mio materiale forse perché con l’esperienza di anni sono arrivato ora ad usarlo in una maniera tutta mia ossidandolo naturalmente con lo zolfo e trasformandolo in colori fantastici.
– Chi è la prima persona a cui mostri i tuoi schizzi?
Diane Pernet è sempre la prima persona a vedere i miei disegni
– Il materiale / pietra che amai di più … oro, argento, diamanti … e perché?
Mi piacciono pietre inusuali anche se non pregiatissime. Mi affascinano le pietre vulcaniche, che penso abbiamo un energia particolare, come l’ Ossidiana Cosmica che viene da Lipari e la Bumble Bee, una pietra rara quasi sconosciuta trovata in un vulcano dell’Indonesia e di cui mi sono accaparrato alcuni pezzi prima che si esaurisse.
– Se i tuoi gioielli avessero una colonna sonora, quale canzone sceglieresti?
– Hai qualche trucco per evitare il classico “blocco creativo” quando sei agli inizi della progettazione di una nuova collezione? Guardare un film, sfogliare una vecchia rivista …
Se posso vado a fare una passeggiata immerso nel verde delle montagne umbre osservando la natura altrimenti sfoglio i libri di fotografia di Karl Blossfeldt o quelli delle illustrazionii di Ernst Haeckel.
– Se non fossi stato un designer che lavoro ti sarebbe piaciuto fare e perché?
Il contadino e vivere della mia terra, quello che faceva mio padre e che io mi sono rifiutato di fare da giovane
When and how you decided that you wanted to be a designer?
It all started almost by chance in the 70’s when i was 16 and i started creating jewels for me and my friends…that’s when my passion started growing and i became an apprentice at an old jewels maker of my hometown. He taught me a lot…he was my master. I’ve become a designer when at 23 i moved to NY and i designed my first collection.
It was your dream job?
Yes definitely, I’ve always worked as a designer to make a living out of it and in the 80’s in NY i’ve fulfilled my dream.
Which is the first thing you designed and for who (yourself,a friend…)?
The very first jewel i designed was a golden ring for my mother, i did it when i was an apprentice.
Who’s the designer you admire the most and why?
That’s tough to answer! I have lots of them…nowadays i admire the work of Iris Van Herpen for her creativity and research and for the fact that she draws inspiration from nature too (as i do).
Who’s your muse, your icon, when you create a dress?
After a 10 years pause i went back to my old love….designing jewels, and the first jewel i did was one inspired my friend Diane Pernet, i used designing jewels for her fashion collections.
It was a big brooch in the shape of spider in oxidized silver with a faceted black onyx, I called it the Black Widow and this piece started the new collection Incredible Creatures and the brooch, plus others that came later, it remained in the daily look of Diane and now is also a pendant that decorates the bottles of his fragrances. I like jewels that have a history, a meaning, a reference, each form has a deeper meaning.
If you had to design an entire collection using just one color or material, which is the one you’d pick and why?
I love working with silver, i feel like it’s “my” material…i’ve gained a lot of experience working with it and now i oxidize it naturally with sulfur and turn it with beautiful colors.
Who’s the first person you show your sketches to?
Diane Pernet is always the first one!
The material/stone you love the most…gold, silver, diamond…and why?
I like unusual stones although not extremely valuable. I am fascinated by volcanic stones, which I think they have got a particular energy, i.e. the ‘Cosmic Obsidian that comes from Lipari and the Bumble Bee, a rare stone found in a volcano of Indonesia and of which I hoarded a few pieces before it exhausted.
If your jewels had a soundtrack, which songs you’d choose?
“I love you” by Wood Kid
Do you have any trick to avoid that “blank page” moment when you’re at the beginning of the designing of a new collection? Do you watch a movie, flip an old magazine…
Usually i go for walk in the Umbria’s mountains to get closer to nature otherwise i flip photography books of Karl Blossfeldt or books of illustrations by Ernst Haeckel.
If you weren’t a designer which job you would like to do and why?
I would be a farmer and live in my land…that’s what my father used to do and what I refused to do as a young man.
