Interview with the designer of Naked Bruce    

Naked Bruce is a brand, which already earned it’s name in home country Lithuania and now it is expanding to foreign markets. This is our exclusive Q&A with Naked Bruce’s founder and designer Monika Vaitkiene. Interview by Raminta Speciute.

When did you decide that you want to be a designer?

I haven’t decided yet. I just am.
The love I feel for fashion and music is stronger than my bachelor’s degree in International relations and Political science.

What is the first thing you designed and for who (yourself, a friend…)?

The first thing I’ve designed were leggings for myself.

Who’s the first person you show your sketches to?

My beloved mother.

Where do you go or do for inspiration? Who inspires you the most?

Free time is not optional for me since I have a 4 year old daughter. Therefore every minute she is asleep or playing on her own is spent reading, listening to music. Most of my ideas are born when the night falls. And the things that inspire me vary from relationships with strangers and family members, to music, culture, countryside and the sea. I feel connected to certain places and try to visit them regularly.
Most importantly I try to relive the moment of falling in love. That is when colors and textures feel like cuddling and staring into the lover’s eyes for hours. I treasure time spent alone.

How does inspiration turn into reality? What is your creative process?

I usually write things down. Sometimes I cut out random words, phrases and pictures from magazines at my grandparent’s house. Then I draw things and put up a story on large sheets of paper.

Do you have any trick to avoid that “blank page” moment when you’re at the beginning of the designing of a new collection? Do you watch a movie, flip an old magazine…?

I rarely watch movies. Sometimes I do flip old magazines before I start designing anything. However, I prefer listening to music or going to the seaside. Solitude is essential for my creative process.

Who’s your muse, your icon, when you create an outfit?

I think of women I love, if they’d feel good in what they’d be wearing. There is no particular person, especially not a well know icon.

How would you describe your design aesthetics?

It’s a patchwork of boyish sensuality and feminine grace.

Is there any particular detail/fabric/element/… that you use repeatedly in your designs? If so, why?

For my leggings I repeatedly use certified Lithuanian polyester fabric with TREVIRA DRY-FIT yarn. It feels like cotton, yet is far better than cotton, for it does not cause allergies, absorbs moisture, guarantees comfort and durability.
I am consistently moving towards sustainable design because I strongly believe that physical objects should comply with the principles of social, economic and ecological sustainability.

If you had to design an entire collection using just one color, which is the one you would pick?

I’d probably go for white.

If your clothes had a soundtrack, which songs, artist or composer you would choose?

This very moment it would an Israeli duo Rex Axes – Waiting for a surprise.

The fabric you love the most: silk, lace, velvet..?

I would not dare to fall in love with just one type of fabric. The variety of materials you can potentially work with is what keeps me interested.

Could you describe a woman/man who would wear your designs?

Phenomenal.

What are your plans for the future in fashion design? Are you preparing any new concepts or collections right now?

I plan to follow my heart, for it has never fooled me. Therefore I know for certain, that I am not going to fall out of love for fashion and design any time soon. Currently I am working on several new collaborations. Stay tuned.

Quando hai deciso che saresti voluta diventare designer?

Non ho ancora deciso…semplicemente lo sono. L’amore e la passione che ho per la moda e la musica è più forte della mia laurea in Relazioni internazionali e Scienze politiche.

Qual è la prima cosa che hai disegnato e per chi?

La prima in assoluto sono stati un paio di leggings che ho fatto per me.

Chi è la prima persona a cui mostri i tuoi bozzetti?

La mia adorata mamma.

Cosa fai per la tua ispirazione? chi è che ti ispira di più?

Ho una figlia di 4 anni e quindi non ho mai del tempo libero, approfitto dei momenti in cui dorme o gioca per leggere e ascoltare musica. La maggior parte delle mie idee nascono di notte. Tutto mi ispira…i rapporti con i membri della mia famiglia e gli incontri con persone nuove, la musica e la cultura in generale, la campagna e il mare. Sento di avere una speciale connessione con alcuni luoghi che cerco di visitare il più spesso possibile. Soprattutto cerco di rivivere il momento in cui ti innamori, dell’innamoramento…il momento in cui i colori e le texture diventano come una carezza, quel guardarsi negli occhi per ore. Amo i rari momenti di solitudine, sono per me e per il mio lavoro preziosissimi.

In che modo l’ispirazione si trasforma in realtà? qual è il tuo processo creativo?

Scrivo moltissimo, a volte ritaglio delle parole o delle frasi, delle immagini dalle riviste a casa dei miei nonni, poi inizio a disegnare e creo dei mood board su grandi fogli di carta.

Hai un trucco per superare il momento della “pagina bianca” quando sei all’inizio del lavoro per una nuova collezione? Guardi un film o sfogli una rivista?

Non guardo molti film, a volte sfoglio qualche vecchia rivista prima di iniziare a disegnare, comunque preferisco ascoltare musica o andare al mare, la solitudine è essenziale per il mio processo creativo.

Chi è la tua musa, la tua icona quando crei?

Penso a una donna innamorata, che si sente a suo agio in quello che indossa, non ho una icona o una persona precisa a cui penso.

Come descriveresti l’estetica dei tuoi modelli?

Un patchwork di sensualità boyish e grazia femminile.

C’è un particolare dettaglio, materiale, elemento…che usi spesso nel tuo lavoro? e se si perchè?

Per i miei leggings ho usato spessissimo certified Lithuanian polyester fabric con TREVIRA DRY-FIT yarn. Sembra cotone ed è molto meglio del cotone, è completamente anallergico, assorbe l’umidità e garantisce un ottimo comfort e durabilità. Sto lavorando perchè il mio lavoro porti a un design sostenibile perchè credo fermamente che gli oggetti debbano rispettare una sostenibilità sociale, economica e ecologica.

Se dovessi disegnare un’intera collezione usando solo un colore, quale sceglieresti?

Probabilmente il bianco.

Se i tuoi abiti avessero una colonna sonora, quali canzoni, artista o compositore sceglieresti?

In questo momento sceglierei il duo israeliano degli Rex Axes con “Waiting for a surprise” .

Il tessuto che ami di più…seta, pizzo, velluto…?

Non mi interessa innamorarmi di un solo tipo di tessuto, ma è la varietà di materiali che si possono potenzialmente usare che mantiene vivo il mio interesse per la moda.

Come descriveresti la donna che indossa i tuoi modelli?

Con un solo aggettivo “phenomenal”.

Quali sono i tuoi progetti per il futuro, a cosa stai lavorando in questo periodo?

Il mio “progetto” è di seguire il mio cuore che non mi ha mai illuso…di sicuro non penso di disamorarmi della moda presto e presto inizierò a lavorare ad una nuova collezione, per ora ci sono in ballo varie collaborazioni…stay tuned.
