Interview with the designer of Beleberda    

Beleberda è un nuovo brand con base a Vilnius in Lituania. Eccovi la nostra intervista esclusiva con Rūta Sakalauskaitė founder e designer di Beleberda.

Quando hai deciso che volevi diventare designer?

A dire il vero ho sempre pensato che avrei trascorso la vita dipingendo, ma sono finito a lavorare in teatro come costumista e questo ruolo ha cambiato il mio punto di vista sul processo creativo. Ho iniziato a capire come la creatività può collegare tante discipline diverse come la pittura, scultura e grafica e volevo usare questa nuova cognizione nel fashion design.

Qual è stata la prima cosa che hai creato e per chi?

Quando ero ancora al liceo, cercavo un cappotto per l’inverno ma non riuscivo a trovarne uno che mi piacesse davvero, così ho deciso di farmelo da solo. Sono stato davvero sorpreso e affascinato dal processo di creazione del capo.

Chi è la prima persona a cui mostri i tuoi bozzetti?

Prima di tutto vengono discussi dal nostro team, quando iniziamo a creare una collezione ci piace mostrare i progressi ai nostri amici e avere così le loro impressioni e pareri.

Cosa fai per trovare l’ispirazione? chi o cosa ti ispira di più?

Tutti i giorni l’ambiente, i viaggi, la natura…i posti dove trascorriamo il nostro tempo libero ma anche le persone che hanno carisma e il loro modo inusuale di vivere.

Come trasformare l’ispirazione in un prodotto finito? qual è il tuo processo creativo?

Dapprima mi piace collezionare elementi come colori, texture, forme…mood e ogni volta cerco di capire come possono essere trasformati in modo nuovo, dopo questa ricerca inizio a disegnare.

Hai un trucco per superare il momento del “foglio bianco” quando sei all’inizio di una collezione?

A volte ho bisogno di disegnare moltissimo. La disciplina e la routine mi aiutano sempre. A volte guardo libri d’arte, passeggio con i miei cani…faccio cose rilassanti che mi aiutano ad aprirmi al desidero di creare.

Chi è la tua musa, la tua icona quando crei un abito?

Ho una sorta di musa “invisibile” che racchiude in se tutte le persone che mi ispirano che conosco…e questa musa invisibile cambia sempre perché le persone che la formano cambiano sempre.

Come definiresti la tua estetica?

Mi piace esplorare i limiti di ciò che è “vero” e “falso” e giocare sull’equilibrio fra questi due mondi. I nostri design raccontano di quello che non puoi perfettamente progettare nella tua vita e nascono dagli imprevisti. Ci piace usare colori accesi, accoppiamenti inediti e insoliti…e in generale mischiare spesso le carte.

C’è qualche elemento/dettaglio/materiale che usi spesso nelle tue creazioni? e se si perchè?

Direi la maglieria melange, sono ossessionato da questa tecnica perchè permette di avere svariate combinazioni di colori, gradienti e texture, mi ricorda molto la pittura.

Se dovessi creare una collezione usando un unico colore, qual è quello che sceglieresti?

Una scelta molto difficile, forse sceglierei il celeste.

Se i tuoi vestiti avessero una colonna sonora, quali canzoni o compositori sceglieresti?

In questo periodo: ‘Saint Saviour – Here in me’ .

Il tessuto che ami di più….seta, pizzo, velluto…?

Il cotone, perchè è davvero un piacere costruire un capo di cotone, mi piace anche che è un tessuto molto semplice all’aspetto. Nonostante ciò si possono creare capi incredibili!

Potresti descrivere chi potrebbe indossare i tuoi capi?

Una persona giovane, creativa e attiva che ama abiti comodi…di sicuro qualcuno che guarda il mondo attraverso un velo di humour e un pizzico di ironia.

Progetti per il futuro? a cosa stai lavorando in questo periodo?

In questo momento stiamo preparando una nuova collezione per un evento in Lituania e stiamo anche organizzando un nostro evento dedicato all’arte. Nel futuro vorrei che Beleberda si espandesse sia come fashion brand che anche come una sorta di movimento che organizza eventi dedicati all’arte e alla creatività.

Interview with the designer of Belaberda

Beleberda is a new brand based in Vilnius, Lithuania. This is our exclusive Q&A with Beleberda’s founder and designer Rūta Sakalauskaitė. Interview by Raminta Spėčiūtė.

When did you decide that you wante to be a designer?

Actually, I thought that I will spend my life painting, but accidentally I was involved into theatre, there I had a project as a costume designer and this changed my point of view on creative process. I began to understand how creativity can connect different disciplines like painting, sculpture, graphics – then I wanted to use that in fashion design.

What was the first thing you designed and for who (yourself, a friend…)?

When I was still in high school, I was searching for a new winter coat and couldn’t find what I wanted. So I decided to make it myself. I was surprised about the process and discovered that it’s fascinating and worth to keep doing it.

Who’s the first person you show your sketches to?

First of all, sketches are discussed by our team. In the making process, we like to show them to friends and find out their first impressions.

Where do you go or do for inspiration? Who inspires you the most?

Everyday environment, traveling, nature, places where we spend most of our free time, and also charismatic people and their unusual lifestyle.

How does inspiration turn into reality? What is your creative process?

At first I like to collect certain inspiring elements such as color, texture, form, mood and every time I’m trying to see how can they be transformed in a new way. After this research I begin to sketch.

Do you have any trick to avoid that “blank page” moment when you’re at the beginning of the designing of a new collection? Do you watch a movie, flip an old magazine…?

Sometimes I just need to sketch a lot. Discipline and routine always helps me. On the other hand, I like to watch art albums, go for a walk with my two dogs or do other relaxing activities that helps me to open my desire to create.

Who’s your muse, your icon, when you create an outfit?

I have my own ‘invisible’ persona, who includes all the inspiring people I know. Exciting thing that this ‘persona’ changes all the time because people come and go through our lives.

How would you describe your design aesthetics?

I like to search the limits about what is ‘true’ and ‘false’, stay in balance between them. Our designs are about that you can’t perfectly plan your life – there always will appear something that will it. In our designs we like to use bright colors, strange combinations of them, but also infiltrate a little bit of mess.

Is there any particular detail/fabric/element/… that you use repeatedly in your designs? If so, why?

Melange knitting. I am obsessed about this technique because it allows me to get various color combinations, gradients and textures. It reminds me of painting.

If you had to design an entire collection using just one color, which is the one you would pick?

It’s really difficult to choose, but probably light blue.

If your clothes had a soundtrack, which songs, artist or composer you would choose?

‘Saint Saviour – Here in me’ at this time.

The fabric you love the most: silk, lace, velvet, …?

Cotton. Because it’s a pleasure to construct from it, also I like that cotton looks simple. But the secret is that you can create extraordinary designs from it.

Could you describe a woman/man who would wear your designs?

A person who is youthful, creative, active and prefers comfortable clothing. Also, someone who looks at the world through a veil of humor and a little bit of irony.

What are your plans for the future in fashion design? Are you preparing any new concepts or collections right now?

At the moment we are preparing a new collection for a fashion event in Lithuania, also we are organising an alternative art event. In the future I would like to expand Beleberda as clothing brand and also as social movement, events organising team.
