Interview with the designer Gülnur Güneş

Gülnur Güneş is one of the the 6 brands participating in “J Autumn 2015” fashion show (organized by Jessica Minh Anh) which will take place on the 29th of October 2015 on the Seine river in Paris. This is our exclusive Q&A with Gülnur Güneş.

When did you decide that you wanted to be a designer?

I was always aware that a part of me belonged to fashion. Even when I was visiting the kindergarten I designed my own clothes. The same was valid later too. Although I had studied International Relations, I found myself drawing during the lessons. It seems as a very radical decision to segue from international relations to fashion, but in fact I can say that everything went as it should go on. Before I began to design, I experienced 1 year in brand management. On the other hand, you have to be knowledgeable with many different things in order to make something from scratch. In other words, you have to take care of finance, identity, correspondence with abroad etc. Therefore my education in international relations, my brand management experience and fashion schooling make it easier to handle with all of them.

What is the first thing you designed and for who (yourself,a friend…)?

Fashion is a passion for me for many years. When I was 6, I insisted on a garment which was a dream of me and hence my mother took me to a sewing workshop. Thus, my first design was my ball dress for kindergarten.

Who inspires you the most?

The woman who inspired me mostly, was the character Zelda in the movie “Gilda” called as a Flapper Girl in the 1920s.

Who’s your muse, your icon, when you create a dress?

I’m inspired of women from a specific time period. Besides, women who set the fashion are always very interesting for me. Not the trends of this period, but their stance and ideology is important. There is a great story behind these women and after reading about them, you can see more than an outfit. We can say that every 10 years, fashion is repeating itself, so I prefer to take inspiration from the origin.

If you had to design an entire collection using just one color, which is the one you’d pick?

Absolutely dark claret red for this season. You will see in the coming fashion show in Paris that my favourite colour is dark claret red (bordeaux).

If you weren’t a designer which job in the fashion world you would like to do?

I would love to be a creative director of a brand. To be a part of creativeness, produce an idea, pursue the trends, and project management etc. are based on creativity and fashion imagination.
