Interview with the designer of Lake (Olesya Kononova)

When and how you decided that you wanted to be a designer?

In the 90s Ukrainian TV finally launched the first fashion program –“Fashion Week”. That time there was almost no such phenomenon in Ukraine as fashion or Ukrainian designers. This fashion program was showing international fashion weeks, as well as reviews of designer collections and backstage and was like “a window to the fashion world”. That was then that I first felt the desire to become a designer.

It was your dream job? Era il lavoro che sognavi da sempre?

Yes.  “Fashion Week” programme became the starting point for dreaming to become a designer. I started drawing, designing clothes and sewing at an early age. When I was finishing school my choice of future profession was obvious. My that-time-school friend and present-day-colleague Natalia Kamenska and I entered the Lviv College of Light Industry.

Which is the first thing you designed and for whom (yourself, a friend…)?

At that post-Soviet Union times it was difficult to find unique garments, so I sewed the first dress for myself at 13. It was wine-red.

Who’s the designer you admire the most and why?

I am very fond of Alexander McQueen. He was not afraid of experimenting with fabrics and textures, he was spending a lot of time and efforts on finishing and embellishment of his clothes, and he was creating incredibly bright fashion shows.

Who’s your muse, your icon, when you create a dress?

I am inspired by strong personalities, by self-confident women, who know what they want, but who manage to stay sensual and romantic. As for me, an example of such a woman is an incredible and amazing actress Tilda Swinton.

If you had to design an entire collection using just one colour, which is the one you’d pick and why?

Black…this is the colour, which is indispensably present in all our collections. In eastern cultures, in Japan in particular, in which I am greatly interested, the black colour symbolizes joy, as well as wisdom and experience.

Who’s the first person you show your sketches to?

To my mom. But firstly, she didn’t appreciate my hobby till I decided to chose design as s profession.

The fabric you love the most…silk, lace, velvet and why?

My favourite fabrics are natural ones (silk, wool). Apart from their natural origin I do care how the fabric can reflect the form. The form is the basis of the design, and this is the form that helps me to display my idea. Basing on this, I prefer those fabrics, which meet my demands more adequately.

If your clothes had a soundtrack, which songs you’d choose?

Se i tuoi vestiti avessero una colonna sonora quale sarebbe?

You know, every item of the collection is individual, so I don’t think that I can make up my mind on one soundtrack. But sometimes a concrete soundtrack can turn into a source for inspiration. For example it happened with music for “The Great Beauty” movie, which inspired me for Fall-Winter 2014-2015 collection.

Do you have any trick to avoid that “blank page” moment when you’re at the beginning of the designing of a new collection? Do you watch a movie, flip an old magazine?

I search for inspiration in cinematograph, art, nature, travelling… During this period it is important for me to stay alone, in silence and seclusion, to hear my inner voice, to dream and to let myself to reflexions – then my hand starts drawing on its own.

If you weren’t a designer which job in the fashion world you would like to do and why?

I think I could become a buyer. I like selecting and combining clothes.
