Talisman by Simon Machabeli    

La mostra dal titolo Talisman è una creazione dell’artista Simon Machabeli. Le sue opere sono ispirate ai costumi mistici, religiosi o etnici e rappresenta uno studio per esplorare il rapporto tra il sacro e il reale.

La storia ha conservato memoria di miriadi di riti e oggetti creati per proteggerci dagli spiriti maligni. Questi riti o oggetti ci si riuniscono con la misteriosa, impenetrabile e enigmatica natura della fonte creativa della vita e ci ricongiungono con la fede di cui abbiamo bisogno per superare le difficoltà della vita.

Molto comune tra i popoli del Caucaso, era una trapunta patchwork in cui il bambino veniva avvolto per proteggerlo da ogni maleficio.

Altrettanto noto e popolare è un oggetto, che ha una funzione di amuleto, un libro (a volte si tratta di un singolo salmo scritto a mano o stampati su carta) cucito all’interno di una borsa ricamata.

Campioni eccezionali di arte calligrafica e miniatura sono conservati nelle camicie talismano indossate dai guerrieri musulmani sotto le armature che riportano testi sacri dal Corano, resi in raffinati ornamenti elaborati.

Questo tipo di suggestioni hanno ispirato questa mostra per cui sono stati realizzati i costumi che portano raccontano i temi ricorrenti del nero, dei testi religiosi e dei costumi etnici.

L’artista cerca di trasmettere e comunicare attraverso la sua opera i fatti storici e le tradizioni enthoculturali nel contesto contemporaneo. Qui la fede, la superstizione, l’esperienza storica e la passione umana per la chiaroveggenza sono viste sotto il prisma di una forma emblematica, è uno spazio unico, dove le immagini vanno oltre il tempo e i luoghi della moda e si oppongono alla vita urbana contemporanea.

Simon Machabeli è un designer georgiano che lavora in diversi campi di performing art, che sia il teatro, il cinema o la moda. Ha iniziato a disegnare da giovanissimo e durante gli anni da studente si è affermato come un promettente scenografo che ha lavorato sia in Georgia che all’estero. Produzioni teatrali a cui ha lavorato sono spesso andate in scena nel prestigioso Fringe di Edimburgo (King Lear, 1995, Self-Portrait of My Generation, 2001). Simon ha ottenuto il suo BA in Performance Costume Design dall’ Edinburgh College of Art. Dopo la laurea alla Central St. Martins College of Art and Design’s (MA in womenswear) nel 2008, Simon è tornato in Georgia e disegnato diverse collezioni, lavorato come costumista e production designer in diverse produzioni teatrali e cinematografiche.

The exhibition entitled Talisman is a creation by the artist – Simon Machabeli . He presents us the works based on mystical, religious and ethnic costumes and focus to explore the relationship between the sacramental and the real.

History has preserved myriads of rituals and objects aimed at our protection from evil spirits and harm.  These rites or objects reunite us with the mysterious, impenetrable and enigmatic nature of life’s creative source and endow us with the faith we need to overcome the difficulties in life.

Highly common among the peoples of Caucasus was an embroidered, quilted patchworck duvet in which infant was enfolded to protect  him from all malevolence.

Just as well known and hitherto popular is an object, which serves a function of an amulet, is a psalm book (sometimes it’s a single psalm handwritten or printed on a paper) stitched inside an embroidered purse.

Outstanding samples of calligraphic and Miniature art are preserved in Talismanic shirts  worn by Muslim warriors under the armour feature sacred texts from Qur’an, rendered in elaborate ornamentation.

These type of materials  inspired the creators of his exhibition as they crafted costumes which  carry across the theme of recurrent black, religious texts and ethnic costumes.

The artist attempts to convey the historical facts and enthocultural traditions in contemporary context. Here the faith, the superstition, historical experience and human passion for clairvoyance are viewed under the prism of emblematic form, it’s an unique space, where visuals reach beyond the realm of fashion and stand in opposition to contemporary urban life.

Simon Machabeli is a Georgian designer working across multiple fields of performing arts, be it theatre, film or fashion.  Simon began to design early on, and in his student years has established himself as a promising set designer working in theatres in Georgia and abroad. Theatre productions designed by Simon often made to Edinburgh Fringe (King Lear, 1995, Self-Portrait of My Generation, 2001). Simon obtained his BA in Performance Costume Design from Edinburgh College of Art. After graduating from Central St. Martins College of Art and Design’s legendary fashion course (MA in womenswear) in 2008, Simon returned to Georgia and designed several fashion collections, worked as a costume and production designer on a number of theatre productions and feature films.
