Interview with designer Anna October

When and how you decided that you wanted to be a designer? Quando e come hai deciso che saresti diventata una stilista?

Avevo 8 anni, stavo disegnando in cortile e scarabocchio dopo scarabocchio avevo disegnato il mio primo vestito…da quel momento ho deciso che era quello che avrei voluto fare e ho iniziato a leggere e studiare qualunque aspetto della moda.

I was 8 years old, drawing at the backyard and accidentally drew my first sketch of a dress. Since that moment I decided that I want to be a fashion designer and started to study everything I could about fashion.

It was your dream job? Era il lavoro che sognavi da sempre?

Assolutamente si, anche se la mia città non era esattamente il luogo più fashion in cui nascere e non c’erano luoghi o strutture per raggiungere il mio sogno…ma non mi sono fermata e ho continuato a sognarlo.

Definitely it was. The surrounding of my native city was really not fashionable and there were no real perspectives to achieve this goal, but I was constantly dreaming about being a designer.

Which is the first thing you designed and for who (yourself,a friend…)? Qual è la prima cosa che hai progettato e realizzato?

È stato un vestito per una gara scolastica a cui decisi di partecipare. Lo realizzai partendo dal vestito da sposa di mia madre, era tutto in broccato dorato, bellissimo. In pratica ne tagliai via un pezzo e realizzai un vestito molto “minimal” per la mia performance.

It was a dress for a school competition that I was taking part in. I did the dress from my mother’s wedding gown; it was gold brocade, very beautiful. I just cut a piece of it and made a very minimalistic dress for my performance.

Who’s the designer you admire the most and why? Qual è il/la designer che ammiri di più e perchè?

Non riesco a sceglierne uno solo…studio moltissimo gli altri designer…sia quelli emergenti, che quelli più affermati, del presente o del passato come per esempio Christobal Balenciaga.

I cannot name just one- I am studying from many- those who are working now and from designers from the past, like Christobal Balenciaga.

Who’s your muse, your icon, when you create a dress? Chi è la tua musa, la tua icona quando progetti un abito?

Ne ho tre che sono le mie icone assolute…Grace Kelly, Jane Birkin e Roisin Murphy (singer from the band Moloko), ma mi piacciono anche tantissimo le ragazze di oggi…quelle moderne principesse con buone maniere e un tocco di follia.

I have my all time muses like Grace Kelly, Jane Birkin and Roisin Murphy. But also I admire girls from the real life- modern princesses with good manners but crazy enough.

If you had to design an entire collection using just one color, which is the one you’d pick and why? Se dovessi pensare una collezione utilizzando un solo colore, quale sceglieresti e perchè?

Sceglierei il baby blue (celeste), sono fissata con la sua tenerezza e purezza, è il colore del cielo e dell’acqua e mi piace usarlo più che posso nelle mie collezioni.

Definitely it would be baby blue. I am addicted with it’s tenderness and clearness- the color of the sky and water. I like to use it very much in my collections.

Who’s the first person you show your sketches to? A chi mostri i bozzetti di una collezione?

A mia madre prima di tutti, è la mia fan numero uno.

My mother, she is my best supporter.

The fabric you love the most…silk, lace, velvet and why? Il materiale che ami di più e perchè?

Mi piace molto usare e lavorare con il jacquard per realizzare delle texture con delle applicazioni o il ricamo su seta…e le frange, adoro il modo in cui si muovono in una specie di danza quando indossi un vestito con le frange.

I like to use jacquard with interesting textures or to create textures myself- making applique or embroidery on silk. Also fringes. I like how they move- you just want to dance when wearing dress with fringes.

If your clothes had a soundtrack, which songs you’d choose? Se i tuoi vestiti avessero una colonna sonora quale sarebbe?

È in continuo mutamento perchè il mio umore e la mia ispirazione non si fermano mai. Per il momento direi gli Arcade Fire. Prima ero più per musica per pianoforte ma adesso direi che il mood delle mie collezioni è molto più rock.

It always changes because my mood and inspiration is moving. By the moment it is Arcade Fire. But before I tend to think that it is more piano, now I want more rock into the mood of my collections.

Do you have any trick to avoid that “blank page” moment when you’re at the beginning of the designing of a new collection? Do you watch a movie, flip an old magazine…

Hai un trucchetto che usi quando stai iniziando a lavorare a una collezione e ti trovi davanti a un foglio bianco?

Faccio cose pazze, compro un biglietto di sola andata per un altro paese o rivoluziono la mia routine giornaliera. Penso che in generale uscire fuori dalla tua “comfort zone” è sempre fonte di ispirazione per nuove idee e di sicuro molto importante per fare un refresh dei tuoi “occhi” creativi.

I am doing crazy things- buying a one-way ticket to other country or totally changing my everyday life. Getting out of the comfort zone is always inspiring and brings new ideas and refreshing the eye.

If you weren’t a designer which job in the fashion world you would like to do and why? Se non fossi una stilista, quale altro lavoro nel mondo della moda ti piacerebbe fare?

Probabilmente passerei sul lato business della moda, una parte del lavoro che comunque faccio quando lavoro al mio brand ed è una parte che mi piace tanto quando disegnare abiti.

I would defintely go to the business area of fashion. That I am still doing when working on my brand and it excites me not less than designing collections.
