È notte a Parigi, su Skype, un uomo francese parla con una newyorchese…
Ma cosa vuol dire “effortless french style” (stile francese senza sforzo)? Come spiegheresti il nostro segreto?
Penso che la chiave di tutto sia che i francesi hanno un’intrinseca abilità nel bilanciare ciò che è discreto e – come direbbero gli americani – easy. Mettono in luce i loro punti di forza (che fortunati loro sembrano infiniti) con abiti ben fatti scelti con molta cura.
Parliamo delle donne francesi, cosa fanno di così speciale?
La donna francese ha di solito un’attitudine molto rilassata e finto trasandata, ma in realtà mette molta attenzione ai suoi abiti. Piuttosto che seguire le ultime mode del momento, preferisce abiti che siano classici e versatili. Ecco perché sembra sempre che non si impegni più di tanto nella scelta di un outfit e può tranquillamente uscire con una camicia da uomo e dei sandali e comunque essere molto sexy.
Beh però tutto questo sembra un po’ noioso no?
No,no, affatto! Il suo guardaroba è così semplice, essenziale e senza tempo che non sembra mai noiosa…ecco quel “senza sforzo”, ecco cosa significa, questo perché ogni anno aggiunge sempre qualche piccolo tocco frivolo e divertente al suo guardaroba. In primavera mi piace come le donne francesi scelgano sempre stampe colorate, colori pastelli e le classiche maglie a righe insieme ai loro classici capi basic.
Ok, certo! Ma non lo fanno anche le donne di New York?
No, ahimè no. Qui tutti sono sempre vestiti di nero dalla testa ai piedi, tutta la città sembra sempre sul punto di partecipare a un funerale gigantesco…anche d’estate! Le francesi invece non hanno nessun problema a indossare una mantella rosa quando piove o un paio di pantaloni con una stampa assurda come delle piccole volpi fluo.
Si, effettivamente questo è uno dei molti talenti delle francesi. Cos’altro ti piace del loro modo di vestire?
È bello il modo in cui apprezzano e sanno dare un valore a un’ottima manifattura o ai dettagli di un capo, che siano dei ricami o bottoni di perla. Il taglio sartoriale e il come hanno cura del loro guardaroba è quello che non smette mai di stupirmi. Anche se si tratta delle loro gonnelline da tennis bianche…anche lì sembrano sempre perfette, neanche una piccolissima macchia di terra rossa (si riferisce ai terreni di gioco dei campi da tennis). Ci deve essere uno speciale agente sbiancante nell’acqua da quelle parti! Mi piace anche come curano i loro capelli.
Cosa ti piace dei loro capelli?
Anche se sono un casino, tutti scompigliati e spettinati…a loro sembra non importare nulla…anche dopo una notte sul divano, si alzano e vanno a lavoro e sembra che non si siano neanche date un’occhiata allo specchio prima di uscire. A raccontarlo sembra tremendo dal punto di vista estetico ma in qualche modo riescono a farlo sembrare una cosa cool. Poi hanno anche un gusto incredibile per le scarpe.
Ho capito…ma sembra abbiano buon gusto in tutto…ora cos’hanno di speciale le scarpe?
Una donna francese indossa scarpe che hanno una linea pulita e femminile ma sono anche pratiche, sempre in equilibrio fra sneaker e sandali con piccoli tacchi. È una scelta molto carina e anche intelligente considerando il fatto che deve stare in giro tutto il giorno attraversando gli acciottolati parigini.
Beh questo perché i francesi sono più smart di chiunque altro ovviamente no? Allora se dovessi tirare a indovinare, cosa pensi che le donne francesi indosseranno con le loro scarpe perfette e i loro capelli perfetti questa estate?
Penso che lo stile “effortless” continuerà ma con un tocco chic e sporty. Guarderà agli anni 60 per le silhouette di gonne a pieghe, polo shirt e vestiti con il colletto. Ma fedele al suo stile butterà dentro qualche pezzo inconsueto e pazzo come un top flou o una gonna metallizzata e nessuna sarà così chic.

What is about “effortless French style”? How would you explain our secrets?
I think the key to ‘effortless French style’ is that the French have an intrinsic ability to balance what is understated and easy. They highlight their best assets (which, lucky for them, seem infinite) with well-made clothes that are thoughtfully chosen.
Let’s talk about French women – what do they do that is so special?
T he French woman may give off a carefree attitude, but she puts a lot of consideration into her clothes. Rather than giving into fast fashion she prefers clothes that are classic and versatile. It’s why she never seems like she’s trying too hard, and can go out at night in a button down and flats and still look provocative.
That sounds kind of boring though, don’t you think?
No not at all! For all the timelessness and simplicity of a French woman’s wardrobe, she never, ever looks boring – that’s what is so effortless about it all. I think it’s thanks to the fun pieces she adds into the mix of year-round staples. In the spring, I really like how French women look to things like bright prints, pastels, and colorful stripes to liven up their neutral basics.
Well of course! Don’t New Yorkers do that too?
No, sadly not. Everyone here is always dressed in black. The whole city looks like it’s attending a giant funeral all the time – even in the summer! I like how French women are more whimsical when it comes to fashion. They have no problem wearing a hot pink cape in the rain or a pair of pants printed with a ton of tiny neon foxes.
Yes, it’s one of the French’s many talents. What else do you admire about how French women dress?
It’s nice how they value impeccable craftsmanship and special details in clothing – like artisanal embroideries and pearl buttons. The tailoring and maintenance involved in their wardrobes never ceases to amaze me too. Even their white tennis skirts always look perfect – not one orange clay court stain in sight. That’s quite the feat. Maybe it’s a sign that there’s a lot of secret bleach in your water. I also really like how a French woman grooms herself – especially her hair.
But what do you like about her hair?
It’s a mess and she doesn’t care – like she slept on some rough couch all night, woke up the next morning and went to work without looking in the mirror. It sounds awful in theory but somehow she pulls it off. She also has great taste in shoes.
It seems like you think she has great taste in everything – what is so good about her shoes too?
A French woman wears shoes that are polished and feminine, but practical. I like how she gravitates towards crisp plimsoll sneakers and flats with tiny heels. They’re both cute and are really intelligent choices when you consider how she has to navigate Paris’s cobblestone streets all day.
Well that’s because French people are supremely smarter than everyone else, obviously. So if you were to take a wild guess, what do you think the French woman will be wearing with her perfect hair and shoes this summer?
I think her effortless traditions will continue, but with a chic, sporty update. She’ll look to the Sixties for classic silhouettes like pleated skirts, polo shirts, and collared dresses. But true to form, she’ll throw in a pièce de résistance for good measure – a neon top or metallic skirt has never looked so chic.
