Mary Katrantzou for the NYC Ballet

Mary Katrantzou esporrà i costumi da lei realizzati per il NYC Ballett all’annuale serata di gala. L’idea, partita da Sarah Jessica Parker (NYCB board vice chair) era che ogni designer avrebbe collaborato con un coreografo per sviluppare una serie di costumi che fossero al contempo belli e funzionali alla danza.

Mary ha fatto team con Justin Peck (coreografo del NYCB), per la realizzazione dei costumi per il suo balletto intitolato “Belles Lettres”. Il nudo con il leopardato e il lavender, giallo e burgundy racchiusi in applicazioni di pizzo sono stati ispirati dalla collezione Mary Katrantzou Resort ’15.

“Guardare i ballerini provare mi ha catapultato in una nuova prospettiva nel processo di design dei costumi per il balletto perché ero improvvisamente parte del pubblico e lo vedevo da questo punto di vista” ha detto Mary Katrantzou rispetto al processo di creazione dei costumi.

“Abbiamo dovuto essere certi che non ci fossero difficoltà o costrizioni per i movimenti dei danzatori, ci siamo concentrati sulla loro fisicità in modo che il costume fosse una seconda pelle per loro”.

Tonight, Mary Katrantzou will showcase bespoke costumes at the New York City Ballet’s annual fall gala. The idea, conceptualised by NYCB board vice chair, Sarah Jessica Parker, was for each designer to team up with a choreographer to develop unique, custom ensembles that are both visually stunning and fully functional.

Mary teamed up with NYCB choreographer, Justin Peck, to create the costumes for his ballet entitled ‘Belles Lettres’. The nude, fitted leotards with lavender, yellow, and burgundy lace appliqués were inspired by the Mary Katrantzou Resort ’15 collection. “Watching the dancers in rehearsal brought a completely new perspective to the process of designing the costumes for the piece because I was suddenly seeing it as part of the audience,” said Mary of her design process for the pieces.

“We had to make sure there were no restrictions in the dancers’ movement, it all came down to the physicality of the dancers and making sure it really was like a second skin for them.” Here we go behind the scenes at the costume shop at the New York institution, and get up close to the designs in the making.
