RETROSUPERFUTURE® and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts are delighted to announce a project which brings together Andy Warhol’s original artworks and SUPER by RETROSUPERFUTURE®’s distinctive design.

“Warhol’s iconic, personal style always incorporated notable eyewear”, said Michael Hermann of The Andy Warhol Foundation.
“We are absolutely delighted to celebrate the artist’s look with this unique collaboration with SUPER.”

This selection of creative sunglasses is the first in line of at least three different projects developed by the Italian brand together with the New York-based Foundation, with the aim of reliving the legacy of one of the most intriguing artists of the last century.

Following Warhol’s evolution as an artist and creative mind, RETROSUPERFUTURE®’s designers have aimed at reflecting his often complex and elaborate line of thought through a series of conceptual sunglasses that fuse together art and design, form and function, aesthetic inquiry and wearability.

In creating this collection of unique eyewear, SUPER’s designers have immersed themselves into Warhol’s archives, choosing between Warhol’s notes, quoted and original artwork and merging them with the brand’s iconic silhouettes. The Photobooth Self-Portraits series was immediately recognized as a bold and witty choice for this first line of sunglasses.

Merging the artist’s irony with the brand’s innovative approach to design, SUPER has reproduced a collage of four different artworks on an elegant silver acetate sheet, reminiscing the old silver gelatin prints used in film photography, and applied them on the inner side of each frame.

The front, on the other hand, is rendered in a sleek metallic grey acetate, resulting in an utterly classy version of four timeless SUPER silhouettes: América, Classic, Ciccio and Drew.

The collection is topped off with ZEISS ultra black lenses, silver hardware and Andy Warhol’s signature engraved on the inside of the frames. Being part of the Visiva series, each silhouette comes with an exclusive matching printed box and custom made packaging.

To celebrate the launch of this collaboration, the RETROSUPERFUTURE® flagship Store in New York city will feature an exclusive screening of “Portraits of the Artist as a Young Man”, a film by Gerard Malanga, one of the most famous Andy Warhol collaborators.

The screening will run through the end of the month.

Running time: 19:38

In an ironic twist of cinema application, this series of portraits mimics the photographic still portrait filmed by Malanga of Warhol at the Factory over a period of several months.

Andy Warhol has commented on Gerard Malanga’s movie-making: “A filmmaker and poet with an aggressive sense of interpretation.” Andy Warhol: Portraits of the Artist as a Young Man has not been screened in its entirety, in the United States, in several decades.
