Ecco l’intervista che ci ha concesso fra un aereo e un altro.
– Cosa ti piace così tanto del surf rispetto agli altri sport?
Il fatto che sei un ambiente che è in continuo cambiamento. L’oceano è magnifico. Tutto quello a cui ti puoi affidare è questo pezzo di fibra di vetro sotto di te e l’istinto che hai imparato a sviluppare con gli anni. Non mi stanca mai, non mi annoio mai sulla tavola perché ogni onda è diversa e quando attraversi quella tratto di spiaggia che ti separa dall’acqua non sai mai quello che ti aspetta.
– Quando e come hai iniziato a surfare?
Sono cresciuta in una famiglia che trascorreva ogni momento libero sulla spiaggia o in giro sulla costa. Mio padre mi ha fatto avvicinare a questo sport quando vivevamo in una piccola città nella punta più a sud dell’Africa.
– Qual è il tuo rapporto con la natura? Cosa ne pensi dello stato attuale dell’ambiente?
Ho avuto il privilegio di vivere gran parte della mia vita surfando le onde dell’oceano e indovinandone i movimenti ancor prima di imparare a leggere, ecco questo è quello che augurerei alle prossime generazioni. Con la speranza di imparare a comportarci con la natura con più rispetto possibile in futuro.
– Qual’è il tuo luogo preferito per surfare e perché?
Tutto dipende dalle maree, dal vento e dalla spiaggia, ogni posto può diventare il tuo posto ideale anche solo per quel giorno. Fra tutti quelli che ho visitato direi che le isole nell’oceano Pacifico sono in assoluto i miei preferiti.
– Se dovessi convincere qualcuno a provare il surf con una parola, cosa diresti?
Il surf è libertà!
– Qual’è il tuo rapporto con la moda? qual’è il tuo stile?
Il mio sponsor principale è Roxy che mi permette di surfare, viaggiare e partecipare alle competizioni, quindi mi vedrai sempre indossare i loro vestiti…mi piace moltissimo la loro immagine e il loro stile e sono davvero contenta di far parte del loro brand.
– Qual’è il tuo rapporto con i social network e il web, non riesci a vivere senza…o a volte vorresti stare offline?
Se devo essere sincera, se potessi scegliere, starei offline sempre. Ma facendo la vita che faccio, vedendo i posti magnifici in cui gareggio, mi sembra giusto poterli condividere con il pubblico che mi segue come gesto di apprezzamento di tutto quello che l’opportunità di vivere.
– Se dovessi regalare la tua tavola preferita, a chi la doneresti?
Ho degli amici che hanno fondato una organizzazione non-profit vicino a dove vivo, così probabilmente li donerei a loro. Poi di sicuro aiuterei le zone disagiate del Sud Africa e cambiare anche solo per poco la vita di qualcuno. Una organizzazione che ammiro è Aleph Surf Organization. www.alephsurf.org
– L’ultima domanda riguarda il nostro nome Zoe che in greco vuol dire “vita”…qual’è il tuo posto dove vivresti, se dovessi scegliere?
Il mio posto ideale sarebbe una zona di campagna, con una casa piccola e vicino al mare, piena di un sacco di gente felice, non vorrei niente di più.
BIO.
Mi chiamo Bianca ho vent’anni e vengo da una piccola città sulla costa nella parte più sud dell’Africa. Come surfista professionista, viaggio tantissimo durante l’anno per partecipare alle gare e competere con le migliori atlete del mondo. Ogni due settimane cambio fuso orario, trascorro la maggior parte del tempo seduta su un aereo e faccio tutto ciò da quando avevo 14 anni. Grazie a questo stile di vita ho imparato tantissima cose, semplicemente osservando tantissime persone e stili di vita diversi e questo per me, oltre al surf che amo, è un grandissimo privilegio, talmente grande che non ci sono parole adatte a esprimere questo sentimento.
L’oceano è un mio compagno di vita, lo analizzo e lo studio, sempre, ed è anche una via di fuga. Il mio cuore impazzisce quando sono sott’acqua, persa nella libertà senza confini dell’oceano e dei suoi movimenti. Impazzisco di gioia quando vedo le persone raggiungere i loro obbiettivi o superano i limiti che la vita gli da. Cerco sempre di tenere gli occhi e il cuore aperto. Adoro l’avventura, amo le sorprese e le cose impossibili.
La cosa più importante è che ho trovato l’immensa verità dell’amore di Dio e la celebro ogni giorno, è questo che mi fa andare avanti.
CARRIERA.
Bianca ha iniziato con il surf a 7 anni, cosa che non deve stupire visto che è cresciuta in una famiglia che da sempre ha vissuto il mare e i suoi sport in modo appassionato. I suoi ricordi d’infanzia sono fatti di infiniti viaggi sulla costa del Sud Africa.
Era bravissima in altri sport ma ha deciso di dedicarsi interamente al surf dopo aver vinto 8 titoli nazionali e tutte le gare a cui aveva partecipato in Sud Africa.
Ha partecipato a centinaia di competizioni quali le prestigiose finali del Rip Curl 2010 e il Billabong World Junior Champs nel 2011. Dal 2012 ha un posto nel World Championship Tour in 2013. Nel suo anno di debutto Bianca ha raggiunto l’8° posto nel World Tour.
Attualmente compete nel ASP World Tour.
-What do you like most about surfing than other sports?
You are in an environment that is constantly changing. The ocean is a beautiful. All you have to trust in is this piece of fiberglass underneath you and an instinct that you have developed over the years. I never get bored of it, because every wave is different, and when you cross from sand to sea, you never know what to expect.
-How, where and why did you start surfing?
I grew up in a family that spent every possible second either on the beach or on a trip up the coast. I was introduced to the sport by my father in a small town near the southern most tip of Africa.
-What is your relationship with nature? What do you think of the current state of the environment?
I don’t have enough knowledge about the current state of the environment to form an opinion. All I can add is having had the privilege of riding the tides and motion of the ocean before I could read a book is something that I would wish upon all the next generations. Hopefully we can treat nature with some respect and make that possible in the future.
-what is your favorite place to surf and why?
Depending on the tides, wind, swell and bank, any spot can turn into being ideal. But from the places I have been, I would have to say that the islands in the Asian Pacific are my favorite by miles.
-if you had to convince someone to start surfing, what would you say?
It is freedom.
-What is your relationship with fashion? do you have your own style? do you like to play with fashion?
I am sponsored by Roxy to surf, travel and compete, so you will always see me wearing their clothes. I love their image and style and feel blessed to be included in their brand.
-What’s your relationship with social, photos, instagram ..? you can not live without it…or sometimes you prefer to be “off line”?
To be honest, if I had the choice, I would go off line permanently. But having such an extra-ordinary lifestyle, it is only fair to have the opportunity to share it with the public, as a gesture of appreciation of everything I get to experience.
-If you had to give away your favorite board, to whom you will give it?
I have friends that have started non-profit organizations close to home, so I would probably donate it to them. A little can go a long way in South Africa and light even change someone’s life. One of them being Aleph Surf Organization. www.alephsurf.org
-The last question, perhaps a little ironic: ZOE means “life” in greek… what would it be your ideal place to live?
My ideal place to live: a small basic house, in a rural area, close to the sea, with a lot of happy people in and around it. Thats all.
BIO:
I am Bianca. I am twenty years old and come from a small coastal town close to the most southern part of Africa. As a professional surfer, I travel to over a dozen countries per year to compete and perform with the world’s best female surfers.
I am in a different time zone every two weeks, spend a lot of time in an economy class seat, and have been traveling since the age of 14. Because of this, I have observed a lot and have developed an open mind towards a lot of cultures and opinions, which is a privilege more than my gratitude can express.
The ocean, which I continually analyze is also my escape. My heart thrives when I find myself under water, lost in the freedom of the ocean and its movements. My heart thrives when I see people reach their full potential or when someone breaks through the oppression of its circumstances. I keep my eyes and heart wide open. I long for adventure, love the unexpected and the unlikely.
I appreciate acts of selflessness.
Most importantly, I have found the overwhelming truth of God’s love. I celebrate it everyday. It is what keeps me going.
SURF CAREER:
Bianca started surfing around the age of 7, which seemed to happen very naturally growing up in a surfing family with a beach-cultured lifestyle. Most of her earliest memories are of her family going on countless trips up and down the coast of South Africa.
Having achieved provincial colours in 5 other sports at school, Bianca decided to pursue surfing as a career after claiming 8 South African titles, and winning every event she entered in South Africa.
Although Bianca has been travelling to compete internationally since a very young age, winning career defining events such as the Rip Curl Final in 2010 and the Billabong World Junior Champs in 2011, academics was a priority and she completed matric with 6 distinctions.
From 2012, she spent one year on the WQS full-time, ended second in the series, which secured her spot on the World Championship Tour in 2013. In her rookie year, Bianca ended 8th in the World Tour ratings.
She is currently competing on the ASP World Tour 2014.
