What is the purpose of creating clothes? They should make you feel good. Desire is beneath them, this is what we want to create. This is the essence of fashion. When I met Vivienne, I was totally struck by the fact that she was as passionate about history as I was. It was the first passion we shared.
I decided to look at late Renaissance costumes, as I went to see a Giovanni Battista Moroni exhibition in Milan, which reminded me a lot of the beginning of my work with Vivienne. Her images of her are iconic, the austerity and elegance are striking, as is the way in which she manages to capture the character of the subject, the black clothes, the faces, the hands in sight.
Everyone knows Janet Arnold’s Patterns of Fashion, published by the School of Historical Dress in South London, directed by Professor Jenny Tiramani. What they do is really important and useful for inspiration. Vivienne and I have worked on many historical patterns taken from this source.
At the same time, I got some sports protection from a close friend and was able to see a connection. We referenced the 1600s by playing with codpieces, with sharp and piercing materials, palazzo trousers, trousers and jackets. There is a lot of black because we love this color very much, it is practical and at the same time the most elegant of all colors.
What is elegance? It’s all in how a person moves through life. It has less to do with what you wear and what you smell like and more to do with your inner self.
