Partnership of CHANEL with the film “Jeanne du Barry”

CHANEL has collaborated with the director (Maïwenn) and the costume designer Jürgen Doering to create six costumes for the character of Jeanne du Barry, played by Maïwenn. Some hats made by Maison Michel and some pieces of CHANEL High Jewelry were also provided for the shoot, as well as makeup and beauty products for Maïwenn.

Faithful to its support for cinematographic creation, CHANEL is the exclusive partner of Maïwenn’s new film, Jeanne du Barry, which it accompanies in particular through the production of six costumes, hats designed by Maison Michel, High Jewelery loans from CHANEL and pieces from Maison Goossens, as well as the involvement of CHANEL Parfums Beauté for the make-up of the main actors.

The director wanted to dedicate her sixth feature film to the last favorite of King Louis XV, whom she plays alongside Johnny Depp (the King of France). Too often reduced to her status as a sulphurous courtesan, Jeanne du Barry was a patron of fashion, art and culture. Born on August 19, like Gabrielle Chanel, she also shared with the seamstress a desire to support and protect the artists and artisans of her time.

To interpret Jeanne du Barry, the director decided to wear reissues of the most emblematic sets from the “Jewelry of Diamonds” collection created in 1932 by Mademoiselle Chanel, which caused a scandal when it was presented. The actress notably wears the reissue of the Fringes CHANEL Haute Joaillerie necklace during the scene where she is presented to King Louis XV. This scene also inspired the poster for the film.

In order to reflect the incredible modernity of this free woman through her wardrobe, Maïwenn carried out extensive research, taking a particular interest in several CHANEL Haute Couture collections designed by Karl Lagerfeld, for whom the Age of Enlightenment was a source inexhaustible inspiration: “When the preparation of the film began, I therefore had a lot of documentation, in which we found CHANEL pieces from collections from the 1980s and 1990s, inspired by the 18th century, she explains. . This is why I wanted to propose a collaboration to Virginie Viard around this project. »

“We tried to find a fair and contemporary way of doing things by working with the energy that drives us in 2023, adds Jürgen Doering. I don’t like it when things are too stuck to references, paintings or history books. I want to get out of these closed worlds and try to transcribe the era with something that airs it out a bit. This collaboration with CHANEL made it possible to bring great accuracy to the character’s costumes, with a very nuanced and subtle approach, which did not play the offbeat card for the sake of offbeat. »

This cinematic adventure was made possible thanks to the know-how of the Maisons d’art: the Paloma workshop, a blur specialist, the feather maker Lemarié, the hat maker and milliner Maison Michel for the creation of the hats (tricorns and straw hats) , as well as the goldsmith Goossens.
