On 10th May, the day after the Cruise 2023/24 show in Los Angeles, 200 students from California schools and universities* studying art, film, fashion or design were invited to the Academy Museum’s Ted Mann Theatre for a talk presented by Tyler Brûlé, President and Editor-in-Chief of Monocle magazine, alongside Bruno Pavlovsky, President of CHANEL’s Fashion activities and Chairman of CHANEL SAS.

Bruno Pavlovsky introduced the conversation by explaining the choice of Los Angeles as the destination for the Cruise 2023/24 show, emphasising the importance for CHANEL, and creativity at large, to reach out to different audiences.

The President of CHANEL’s Fashion activities then invited Dimitri Chamblas, director of the Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and close friend of Virginie Viard, to the stage. The choreographer and dancer looked back over his various collaborations with the House, notably during the CHANEL – Dakar 2022/23 Métiers d’art show presented in Senegal last December. An ideal opportunity to highlight the links between disciplines dear to the Artistic Director.

Actress and CHANEL ambassador Marion Cotillard and the President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Janet Yang continued the event by discussing CHANEL’s close connections with cinema. The actress recalled her long-term relationship with CHANEL, from her early days as an actress to her role as ambassador today. This support was renewed this year with the film Little Girl Blue by Mona Achache, in which Marion Cotillard plays the lead role and which will be presented at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Janet Yang highlighted CHANEL’s support for the Academy through the Academy Gold Fellowship for Women, a programme that supports the female directors of today and tomorrow.

Before answering questions from the students in the room, Bruno Pavlovsky spoke about the opening of the new CHANEL boutique in Beverly Hills, which coincides with the Cruise 2023/24 show. This was an opportunity to recall the importance of the boutiques in the House’s strategy, and the desire to integrate the experience and the client relationship right from the start of the boutiques’ conception.
