Fashion and dance have had a special relationship since the 1830s, thanks to the first great romantic ballerina, the Italian dancer and choreographer Maria Taglioni, until the advent of the Ballets Russes in 1909, from which the couturiers of the time drew hands full. The aesthetics of ballet fascinated many couturiers, who would become its costume designers. A century later, balletcore has returned to inspire important fashion brands, which have infused it with the strength of the contemporary.
So how to wear and embrace this aesthetic?
Ballet flats are timeless and look chic with everything from workwear to ordinary jeans and a t-shirt. Unlike those painful toe shoes that real ballerinas wear, ballet flats are known for being comfortable and easy to walk in.
There’s nothing more balletcore than a simple bodysuit. Wear it with jeans or a skirt.
Feel extra frilly in a balletcore-inspired skirts or with leg warmers over pink blushed leggings matched to your scarf and for an extra touch embellish your hair with a bow.
