Louis Vuitton pays tribute to the Artistic Director of the Men’s Collections Virgil Abloh with the preview arrival in Milan of the Men’s Spring-Summer 2022 collection and with a spectacular display in the windows and in the courtyard of the Montenapoleone store.
A sculpture of a toy airplane, a recurring image of the symbolism of the Creative Director, the paper plane, also known as origami, is an image that refers to childhood, a theme dear to Abloh, but also becomes food for thought in relation to the ownership concept. In fact, Abloh ironically defined the airplane as “a miniature imitation of an airplane invented by the Wright brothers in 1903” or as an Un-designed, the term that defines fashion, art or objects of everyday life without artistic property. The plane stands on a mirrored platform and is decorated with the motif of clouds, a further reference to Abloh’s work for Louis Vuitton.
The animation of the shop windows is instead inspired by the game of chess, one of the key themes of the Spring-Summer 2022 collection, which becomes a metaphor for human existence. Played by people of all ages, cultures and creeds, the game addresses the essentially human themes of limitation and defeat, representing the challenges, cunning and intellectual self-defense we face in life. From “stall” to “checkmate”, the rules of chess are present in our daily life. His pieces can be reflected in the aesthetics of a multitude of cultures and subcultures, and they also echo the visual codes of rave culture and the formation of Virgil Abloh. In the collection, the chess graphics give rise to a variety of motifs, textures, three-dimensional effects and trompe l’oeil, while the figures of the game take shape in the silhouettes of the models, through wide skirts, hats and ultra-voluminous gloves.
On an evocative black and white checkered background, the candid mannequins, faithful 3D reproductions of the models of the show, interact with bishops, pawns, towers, kings and queens, in an exra-size version. In the large and bright space of the ground floor of the Louis Vuitton store in Montenapoleone, between the two stone columns, an evocative installation dominates a black and white checkered platform. The scene, full of emotional tension, represents the Leonardo model, who walked the runway with look 9 from the SS 2022 collection, who is about to play a game of chess against himself, ready to test himself and confront his weaknesses. . Beside him, a tower dominates the scene and seems to be the judge of the challenge. The installation continues on the floor dedicated to men’s collections, where customers can preview a vast assortment of clothing, footwear, accessories and leather goods from the Spring-Summer 2022 collection.
