Translating the visual identity of the Fall/Winter 2018 Prada Womenswear Campaign into moving image, Neon Dream is a short movie featuring model Amanda Murphy, and starring Hollywood actress Sarah Paulson. Here, Murphy is a mysterious heroine, while Paulson plays multiple incarnations of one character, both women moving constantly through the glowing nocturnal landscape of Las Vegas and its famous
Sunset Strip, in an ever-transforming narrative.

Inspired by the distinct visual language of the city, its showgirls and neons, mid- century iconography and totems of Americana, the film situates Murphy in a surreal reflection of the materiality of Las Vegas, envisaged as an oasis of light in a desert of darkness. Although filmed on location, this Las Vegas is nevertheless a fiction, composed of archetypes – red velvet drapes, glittering lights, glowing Technicolor,
billboards and convertibles. Reality, reimagined. A neon dream.

In a striking turn, heightening the sense of the dreamlike and hypnagogic, Sarah Paulson features in a cameo role, punctuating the action throughout the film. She plays a series of roles, but each represents a different facet of the same character, a guardian angel figure who reappears again and again like an aesthetic echo. Paulson’s reiteration in these different guises – these separate illusions of one self – emphasizes the unreality of the scenes. It also underlines Prada’s continual and deep fascination with the multiplicity of roles of singular women, and the constant shifting of personal identity through fashion.

Entrambe in viaggio tra le luci del paesaggio notturno di Las Vegas e della sua famosa Sunset Strip, all’interno di un racconto in divenire.
L’emblematico linguaggio visivo della città, le sue showgirl e le sue luci al neon, l’iconografia della metà del secolo e i simboli della cultura americana fanno da sfondo al film che inquadra Murphy in una surreale immagine riflessa della materialità di Las Vegas, vista come un’oasi di luce in un deserto buio. Una Las Vegas inventata, fatta di archetipi: tende di velluto rosso, luci scintillanti, Technicolor sgargiante, cartelloni e decappottabili. La realtà, re-immaginata. Un sogno al neon.

In una versione insolita che accentua il senso onirico e l’illusione, Sarah Paulson appare in un cameo che ricorre durante tutto il film. Interpreta diversi ruoli, ognuno dei quali però rappresenta un lato differente dello stesso personaggio, una sorta di angelo custode che riappare continuamente, come un’eco estetica. La sua reiterazione in queste vesti sempre diverse – le molteplici illusioni di un unico sé – sottolineano l’irrealtà delle varie scene. Allo stesso tempo, evidenziano l’attrazione costante e profonda di Prada per la moltitudine di espressioni di ogni donna, e la continua evoluzione dell’identità individuale attraverso la moda.

“Vestire Prada è sempre stato un modo facile per connettermi con me stessa …. con tutte le parti di me. È stato quindi molto emozionante quando mi hanno chiesto di partecipare a questo film fantasioso ed evocativo, che abbraccia le tante sfumature della femminilità”, afferma Sarah Paulson.
