Un defilé che già sulla carta si presentava come l’evento e la novità della haute couture parigina, abbiamo avuto il piacere di assistervi (controllate il nostro instagram per alcune live-pictures) e le promesse sono state ampiamente mantenute.
Per la primavera/estate 2014, Ralph & Russo ci riportano ai tempi in cui l’haute couture prendeva forma, un mondo in cui il glamour e la realtà andavano a braccetto con la fantasia.
Ogni look rimanda ai gloriosi anni ’40 e ’50: il top della moda magicamente catturato da artisti del calibro di Walde Huth, Henry Clarke, Irving Penn, Willy Maywald e Lillian Bassman. La donna di questa stagione è carica di questo tipo di allure. Sognante e sicura di se, ogni modello potrebbe tranquillamente essere uscito dagli iconici ritratti di ognuno di questi maestri della fotografia.
Il potere e la drammaticità dell’immaginario in bianco e nero di quell’epoca è riflesso nelle vite strettissime, le silhouette grafiche e i volumi generosi dei classici abiti da ballo, in gazar e organza, il massimo della raffinatezza. Questi sono abiti degni di una dea che avrebbero fatto battere il cuore di Ava Gardner e Rita Hayworth.
L’ispirazione nasce anche dal romanticismo di un archetipico giardino francese: jardin à la française. Fantasie ornate di intricati ricami fatti a mano su crêpe di seta e pizzo Chantilly in toni salmone e rosa con una palette che si tinge di blu polverosi, tenui grigi e scintillanti argenti, in leggera georgettes e tulle.
Colli in chiffon delicati su abiti dallo smaccato taglio sartoriale, come peplum che incorniciano finemente gonne dal taglio anni ’50. Corpetti strutturati sbocciano maestosamente sulle spalle, drappi di georgette si avvitano a formare rose di tessuto, alcune esplodono in vita come lunghe cascate.
Lavorando nel pieno segno della tradizione della couture, Ralph & Russo dimostrano le loro abilità da atelier che dimostrano il perché sono diventati membri della prestigiosa Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, facendoli diventare il primo marchio britannico nell’ultimo secolo a essere inclusi nel calendario ufficiale della federazione. Un abito può arrivare a richiedere 1600 ore di ricamo a mano, 800000 perline e cristalli e 120 bottoni fatti a mano.
Con un finale di sognanti e ampi abiti in rosso lampone, blu royal e bianco, Tamara Ralph e Michael Russo portano in alto la bandiera Union Jack per la Gran Bretagna, mettendo a segno con il loro defilé un colpo che rimarrà nella storia della moda.

For Spring/Summer 2014, Ralph & Russo hail us back to Haute Couture’s heyday – a world in which glamour was rife and reality was forfeited for fantasy.
Each look is a reminder of the glorious 1940s and 1950s: high points in fashion that were so magically captured by the likes of Walde Huth, Henry Clarke, Irving Penn, Willy Maywald and Lillian Bassman. This season’s woman oozes such allure. Soignée and confident, each model could have effortlessly stepped out of an iconic portrait by any of those photographic masters.
The power and drama of that era’s black-and-white fashion imagery is reflected in the cinched waists, the graphic silhouettes and the generous volumes of classic ball gowns – in gazar and organza – that epitomise sophistication. These are goddess gowns that would have sent Ava Gardner’s and Rita Hayworth’s hearts aflutter.
But the collection is not just all oomph. Super-femininity also underlies every aspect of this ‘bouquet’.
Embellishment has been inspired by the romance of an archetypical French garden – jardin à la française. Ornate patterns are intricately hand-embroidered on silk crêpe and Chantilly lace in salmon and rose-pink, with the palette extending to dusty blues, pale greys and shimmery silvers, in light georgettes and tulles.
Chiffon neckties flutter delicately over razor-sharp tailored suits, and bow-belts fasten pet- al-like peplums that finely frame 50s-shaped pencil skirts. Structural floral corsages blos- som majestically on shoulders, and drapes of georgette swirl organically into crisp roses – some bursting at the hips into cascading trains.
Working in true couture tradition, Ralph & Russo demonstrate atelier skills that attest to why they were invited to membership of the all-prestigious Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, making this duo the first British brand in a century to show on the federation’s official schedule. An exceptional garment boasts as many as 1,600 hours of hand embroidery, 800,000 beads and crystals, and 120 hand-made fabric buttons.
Above all, Ralph & Russo demonstrate a lesson in the art of flattery: the svelte shapes and timeless appeal that have got this young maison de couture where they are today and enabled them to build such a steadfast and devoted client base.
With a finale of voluminous, sweeping gowns in raspberry red, royal-blue and white, Tamara Ralph and Michael Russo are flying the Union Jack for Great Britain, bringing Paris Haute Couture Week to a close with a landmark in fashion history.
