Maria Grazia Chiuri: Just knowledge gives freedom

Italian fashion designer Maria Grazia Chiuri explained that for the Dior Couture Fall/Winter 2017-2018 collection she decided to pay tribute for monsieur Christian Dior.

“I was very close to him. I his archives I have found very interesting book in which he speak about Dior in the world. It surprised me a lot because it was so connected with reality. Then I started to reflect the idea that Dior immediately became global brand.”

Maria Grazia Chiuri explained that in Dior archives she found inspiration for collection: “Not only the shapes but also the names of clothes inspired me. I really love the poetic names of the dresses – “Abandon” or “Diabolique”. I think that in women life could be “Diabolique” or “Abandon” periods.

Another inspiration for the designer is history. For the “Royaume d’amour” jacket is based on history of salon culture.

“Before women had salon – meeting place where people gathered to speak. In this room woman started to explore the way to society. At the moment it’s the same thing – just with the culture you can support the other women around the world.

“Only culture can give more opportunities. That’s why for the collection I have chosen women who went around the world to explore it. They were dressing as a men because for them was dangerous to show that they are women. They wanted to explore the world because they understood that just knowledge gives freedom.”
