Interview with the designer of WeAnnabe

When and how you decided that you wanted to be a designer?

I decided to be a designer right after launching my brand. At first it was supposed to be a group of unknown designers under one brand. But when I realized that clothing designed by me was more desirable I decided to reorganize this project into my own designing brand.

It was your dream job?

It actually was my dream job, and it is. But I never could have though that I will be doing like that.

Which is the first thing you designed and for who ?

They were all designed just for me.

Who’s the designer you admire the most and why?

I admire Diene Von Furstenberg because of her life story and her personal strength. I always admire stories that stay behind the dress.

Who’s your muse, your icon, when you create a dress?

My muse is my perfect WeAnnaBe girl. She likes everything I create and wears it in her daily life. Thats why I always think of her when I do my collections and I ask myself if she likes or not.

If you had to design an entire collection using just one colour, which is the one you’d pick and why?

I almost did it once and I wanted to pick a milky white color. I never have a right answer on the question “why”, it’s always just “because” meaning “frankly, I’ve no idea”. I assume there are plenty of designers who know what they’re doing but I’m not one of them.

Who’s the first person you show your sketches to?

I don’t normally do a lot of sketches. My ideas are always in my head and I try to explain my tailors to start with some particular base and to prepare some particular decors and then I create my pieces in process of fittings. So I don’t really need any sketches because they’re usually irrelevant by the time the piece is ready

The fabric you love the most…silk, lace, velvet and why?

Every season I change my mind and it depends on different reasons. One of them can also be a trend. I don’t refuse using some trendy laces but I always choose something that is in my mood. If you go through my lines you’ll see I have plenty of laces used in different seasons.

If your clothes had a soundtrack, which songs you’d choose?

I would definitely choose some different ones because my cloth are always different as my mood so that would be extremely hard to choose some particular one

Do you have any trick to avoid that “blank page” moment when you’re at the beginning of the designing of a new collection? Do you watch a movie, flip an old magazine…

I close my eyes and pretend what would be the most perfect outfit for me today and then I understand what is my mood and what style would I use etc

If you weren’t a designer which job in the fashion world you would like to do and why?

I was a photographer once but in future I would try myself in a fashion media world.

Anna  Sokol was born in Odessa, Ukraine. She studied finance and economics in the university. After having her two week internship in the bank, she knew the job in the office is not for her. She tried herself in opening the restaurant, then it was 6 years practice in photography. In March 2014 she knew she wanted to do something bigger, combining art and business.
