From June 4 to 7, 2025, Prada presented the twelfth edition of Prada Mode in Osaka, together with Inujima Project in collaboration with Kazuyo Sejima. The two events showcased Sejima’s vision for the Japanese island of Inujima, in addition to the second edition of Prada Mode with Kazuyo Sejima & Associates director and co-founder of SANAA. The latter was the most recent edition of Prada’s series of events dedicated to contemporary culture, with an exhibition in Osaka of Sejima’s designs for the transformation of Inujima, preceded by a multi-day preview held directly on the island.
In the days leading up to Prada Mode Osaka, Inujima Project offered a private preview on the island located in the Seto Inland Sea, near Naoshima, western Japan. During the event, Prada and Sejima inaugurated a permanent pavilion at Inujima Life Garden, designed by the architect and donated to the island by Prada, while also presenting the history of Inujima, Sejima’s projects over the past 17 years, and her vision for the future of this territory.
Historically, the island was known for its copper quarries and smelting; by the early 20th century, it was said to have had a population of 5,000. In the years that followed, however, the local industry slowly declined and the refinery was abandoned for almost a century. In 2008, there were about 40 people in total living on the island, with an average age of 70. In the same year, the Fukutake Foundation, which manages the Benesse Art Site Naoshima, invited Kazuyo Sejima to transform the island and rethink it as a whole as part of the Benesse Art Site Naoshima project. Proceeding in phases, Sejima worked on renovating old homes, building gallery spaces, organizing workshops and a community garden, and building accommodations designed to provide visitors with a deeper, more authentic experience. Inujima “Art House Project” was unveiled with the opening of F-Art House in 2010.
