Some numbers are imbued with hidden meanings. But never in history had a number, in less than a century, become so charged with a random significance tied to a woman. In the world of the Maison Chanel, nothing is left to chance, and the magnetic energy of Gabrielle Chanel transcends time.

Now, imagine finding yourself in the founder’s favorite place — a theatre. (La Scala in Milan, during the Galà Fracci, hosted three young friends of the Maison: Nicole Cavallo, Sveva Fischetti and Marta Pareccini) watching a ballet performance, the circle feels complete.

It was 1913 when Gabrielle, together with Boy Capel — the love of her life — happened upon a performance of The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky, choreographed by Nijinsky, the principal dancer of Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. This piece of avant-garde theatre would prove to be pivotal in her life.

Then, in 1924, Gabrielle Chanel — always focused on freedom of movement in her designs — brought her bold vision to the world of dance by designing the costumes for Le Train Bleu, a production by the Ballets Russes. The libretto was written by Jean Cocteau, the music composed by Darius Milhaud, and the stage curtain and program created by Pablo Picasso.

What does the number 5 represent for you?

There are many symbols of the Maison that I feel close to, but the number 5 has a special place. It is the fifth month of the year, the month of my birthday. It is also the fifth zodiac sign, Leo, which is the sign of Alexandro, my boyfriend

What does ballet evoke in your memories?

I have been doing classical dance for years. It has given me a wonderful path of growth and training, transmitting values ​​that I hope to keep forever: commitment, sacrifice, dedication, concentration, precision.

How would you describe the moment when the curtain opens at Teatro alla Scala?
It is pure emotion. When the curtain opens at La Scala there is a moment in which everything stops and then, in a second, the magic begins.
