During Milan Design Week, from Tuesday, April 8 to Sunday, April 13, 2025, the ISSEY MIYAKE / MILANO flagship store will host the special installation “TYPE-XIII Atelier Oï project”. A project born from the collaboration between the Swiss design studio atelier oï and A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE, which explores a new concept in which “a metal thread” and “a piece of fabric” combine to create innovative lighting products. The resulting products will be presented in an immersive installation.
The project is the result of the harmony between atelier oï, known for its work in fields such as architecture and product design, and A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE, which continues to push the boundaries of clothing creation across disciplines and industries. Prioritizing the creative process, the project developed through a continuous exchange of ideas, combining different perspectives and techniques. A-POC ABLE has long studied the relationship between “a piece of fabric” and “the human body”, creating innovative design pieces. With this project, the potential of “a piece of fabric” is further expanded, entering the new realm of lighting. The installation will feature two series of lamps born from the collaboration with atelier oï.
The “O Series” is a line of portable lighting co-developed with Ambientec, a Japanese manufacturer specializing in this field. The series adopts an approach centered on human sensitivity, allowing users to move the light freely in their daily environment, harmonizing with different spaces and needs. Its design offers a versatile and pleasant experience.
This is inspired by the beauty and delicacy of flowers. Just as flowers are placed in an environment to harmonize with the season or welcome guests, we imagined a light element that can be freely arranged according to the mood and context. The organic folds diffuse light gently, softly illuminating the space and quietly enriching the everyday—like a flower blooming.
For this proposal, atelier oï designed an elegant oval wire frame, while the recycled polyester shade integrates the “Steam Stretch” textile technology used in the creation process of A-POC ABLE garments. “Steam Stretch” is an innovative technique in which heat-reactive threads are woven into a single piece of fabric, which then shrinks when exposed to heat, resulting in a delicate, yet durable, three-dimensional pleated texture.
The interplay between the organic shape of the fabric, light and shadow within the structure create a unique aesthetic expression, subtly enhancing the atmosphere of any space. Additionally, the oval wire frame and the fabric shade are detachable, allowing the lamp to be folded and stored easily when not in use. This versatile and functional design adds value and joy to the home environment.
The “A Series” is a line of lamps made from seamless knitted fabrics, a distinctive feature of A-POC. In this series, the lampshades are pre-knitted from a roll of fabric and take on a three-dimensional shape when the metal frames are inserted. In addition, the lampshades connected to each other can be cut at different points to create various shapes, or joined to become double or triple, allowing them to be customized to fit different spaces and offering a playful and original design that embodies the spirit of A-POC.
The first proposal of the series, a prototype of a pendant lamp developed in collaboration with the Spanish lighting brand PARACHILNA, will be exhibited for the first time. PARACHILNA is a company known for its commitment to authentic design, careful selection of materials, and an artisanal approach to the creation of unique lamps.
