Interview with the photographer Andrea Menin

Andrea Menin, 41 anni, nato a Padova, Italia, si trasferisce a Milano nel 1998 per lavorare come modello e studiare recitazione. Nel frattempo, tra mille lavori, si laurea in Lettere Moderne e nel 2014 fonda il sito ChillaxingROAD. Autodidatta, è specializzato nella fotografia di streetstyle, fashion show, backstage,  lavorando principalmente durante le Fashion Week e il Pitti.

Andrea Menin, 41, was born in Padua, Italy, he moved to Milan in 1998 to work as a model and study acting. Meanwhile, a thousand works, he graduated in Modern Literature and in 2014 he founded the ChillaxingROAD site. Self-taught, specializing in the photography of street style, fashion shows, backstage, working mainly during Fashion Week and the Pitti.

When and how you decided that you wanted to be a photographer? Quando e come hai deciso che volevi essere un fotografo?

È nato tutto un po’ per caso. Mi divertivo a fotografare, così per gioco, i matrimoni dei miei amici. Mi piaceva che le mie foto fossero le prime che vedevano per far rivivere loro le emozioni di quel giorno così importante. Ogni volta tutti rimanevano entusiasti dei miei lavori e mi spronavano a farne una professione. E così è stato.

It all started a little ‘by chance. I enjoyed photographing, just for fun, the marriages of my friends. I liked that my photos were the first who saw to revive their emotions of that important day. Whenever all remained enthusiastic about my work and spurred me to make it a profession. And so it was.

It was your dream job? E ‘stato il tuo lavoro ideale?

No, il mio lavoro dei sogni ve lo svelo dopo… Però la fotografia è un ottimo strumento per raccontare delle storie, per dare delle emozioni, perché è questo quello che voglio ottenere con il mio lavoro.

No, my dream job I’ll reveal later … But photography is a great way to tell stories, to give emotions, because that’s what I want to achieve with my work.

Which is the first thing you photographed ? Qual’è la prima cosa che hai fotografato?

Sinceramente non me lo ricordo, ma sicuramente sarà stato qualche scatto fatto al mare rubando la macchina col rullino di papà. Ero affascinato dal rumore dello scatto e del rullino che si riavvolgeva. E poi… la sorpresa di vedere le foto solo dopo lo sviluppo.

I honestly do not remember it, but it certainly has been some shots made at sea by stealing the car with Dad’s camera roll. I was fascinated by the shot noise and the roll that is rewound. And then … the surprise of seeing the pictures only after the development.

Who’s the photographer you admire the most and why? Chi è il fotografo che ammiri di più e perché?

A dire il vero non ho nessun riferimento principale, né del passato né del presente. Sono molto curioso e quindi scopro continuamente artisti nuovi che mi ispirano e mi influenzano. Mi piace quando un fotografo riesce ad imporre il suo stile, tanto da renderne riconoscibile la foto.

E poi amo soprattutto chi riesce ad emozionarmi con i ritratti, chi riesce a farmi venire la curiosità di voler sapere cosa c’è dietro a quegli occhi che ti guardano.

Actually I have no reference, neither the past nor the present. I am very curious and then I discover new artists who continually inspire me and influence me. I like when a photographer is able to impose his style, so as to make recognizable picture.

And I especially love those who can move me with the portraits, those who can make me come the curiosity of wanting to know what’s behind those eyes that look at you.

When you take a photo, how do you live this moment. Can you detach yourself from reality? Quando si scatta una foto, come vivi questo momento. Puoi staccarti dalla realtà?

Beh, in effetti quando sei dentro al tuo lavoro è come essere un po’ in un’altra dimensione. Non mi stacco proprio dalla realtà, ma sicuramente entro totalmente dentro al flusso di idee che voglio rappresentare, alla storia che voglio raccontare.

Well, actually, when you’re inside your job it is like being a little ‘in another dimension. I detach myself from reality not exactly, but certainly within fully into the flow of ideas that I want to represent, the story I want to tell.

Your job takes you often travel and visit many countries; What fascinates you more than an unfamiliar place? It can be an ideal location to make the shots? Il tuo lavoro ti porta spesso a viaggiare e visitare molti paesi; Cosa ti affascina di più di un luogo sconosciuto? Può essere un luogo ideale per fare gli scatti?

Visitare continuamente posti nuovi è affascinante e stimolante. Sono molto attratto dalle diverse architetture che caratterizzano le città e i diversi quartieri delle stesse. Si respira sempre un’aria molto energica e questo mi inspira continuamente. Attualmente la mia location ideale è Porta Nuova a Milano; grattacieli, vetri, riflessi, spazi di ampio respiro.

Constantly visiting new places is fascinating and inspiring. They are very attracted by the different architectures that characterize the city and the different districts of the same. It always breathes a very energetic and this inspires me constantly. Currently my ideal location is Porta Nuova in Milan; skyscrapers, glass, reflections, broad spaces.

Who’s the first person you have photographed ? Chi è la prima persona che hai fotografato?

Sicuramente i miei genitori al mare, riprendendo la domanda di prima. Da professionista, Skin, la cantante degli Skunk Anansie, in una DJ session durante la Vogue Fashion Night di Milano di qualche anno fa.

How did you feel on your first show? What a feeling you feel when someone appreciates and “reads” your photos? Come ti sei sentito sul tuo primo show? Che sensazione si prova quando qualcuno apprezza e “legge” le tue foto?

Tensione, paura, nervosismo, ansia. Ma anche tanta gioia ed eccitazione, naturalmente. L’approvazione di chi guarda i miei lavori è importantissima, mi da sicurezza, ho bisogno dei riscontri, visto che io sono sempre molto critico su me stesso e mai contento e soddisfatto appieno.

Tension, fear, nervousness, anxiety. But also a lot of joy and excitement, of course. The approval of the beholder my work is very important, to me security, I need feedback, since I am always very critical of myself and never happy and fully satisfied.

If your photos had a soundtrack, which songs you’d choose? Se le tue foto avessero una colonna sonora, quali canzoni sceglieresti ?

Questo è un argomento molto importante. La mia mente viaggia continuamente con una colonna sonora, creo i miei film mentali con le canzoni che mi emozionano. Attualmente sono trasportato dalla nuova scena Trap italiana, ma mi piace spaziare in ogni genere. Ogni foto, ogni storia, deve avere la sua colonna sonora ideale.

This is a very important topic. My mind constantly traveling with a soundtrack, create my mental movie with songs that excite me. Currently they are transported by the new Italian scene Trap, but I like to wander in every genre. Every picture, every story must have its ideal soundtrack.

If you weren’t a photographer which job you would like to do and why?
Se non fossi stato un fotografo che lavoro vorresti fare e perché?

Ecco svelato il mistero…  Se non fossi un fotografo sarei un attore. Anzi, posso dire di essere un attore, magari non lo faccio, ma lo sono….Recitare e trasformarmi in un personaggio, un qualcun altro da me, emozionarmi ed emozionare. Fantastico ed impagabile.

The mystery is revealed … If I was not a photographer I would be an actor. Indeed, I can say to be an actor, maybe I do not, but so are … .Recitare and turn me into a character, a someone else from me, move me and excite. Fantastic and priceless.
