Who will win Hugo Boss Prize?

Quest’autunno HUGO BOSS ed il Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation festeggiano il 20° anniversario del premio HUGO BOSS annunciando il vincitore per l’edizione 2016. I sei artisti finalisti sono: Tania Bruguera, Mark Leckey, Ralph Lemon, Laura Owens, Wael Shawky ed Anicka Yi. L’annuncio avrà luogo il 20 ottobre al Museo Guggenheim a New York.

Il premio biennale, che comprende l’assegnazione di 100.000 USD, è amministrato dalla Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. Lo scopo è di dare riconoscimento ad artisti il cui lavoro è tra i più innovativi ed influenti nel mondo dell’arte contemporanea. Dal suo inizio nel 1996, ha premiato dieci artisti eccezionali ed è divenuto uno dei principali riconoscimenti nell’arte contemporanea. I precedenti vincitori sono: Matthew Barney (1996), Douglas Gordon (1998), Marjetica Potrč (2000), Pierre Huyghe (2002), Rirkrit Tiravanija (2004), Tacita Dean (2006), Emily Jacir (2008), Hans-Peter Feldmann (2010), Danh Võ (2012) e Paul Chan (2014).

I giurati per l’edizione 2016 del HUGO BOSS PRIZE sono Katherine Brinson, Curatrice Arte Contemporanea, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; Dan Byers, Mannion Family Senior Curator, Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; Elena Filipovic, Director/Chief Curator, Kunsthalle Basel; Michelle Kuo, Editor-in-Chief, Artforum International e Pablo Leon de la Barra, Guggenheim UBS MAP Curator, Latin America Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

This fall HUGO BOSS and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the HUGO BOSS Prize announcing the winner for the year 2016. The six finalists are: Tania Bruguera, Mark Leckey, Ralph Lemon, Laura Owens, Wael Shawky and Anicka Yi. The announcement will take place on Oct. 20 at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

The biennial prize, which includes the allocation of $ 100,000, is administered by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. The purpose is to give recognition to artists whose work is among the most innovative and influential in the contemporary art world. Since its inception in 1996, he honored ten outstanding artists and has become one of the main awards in contemporary art. Previous winners are: Matthew Barney (1996), Douglas Gordon (1998), Marjetica Potrč (2000), Pierre Huyghe (2002), Rirkrit Tiravanija (2004), Tacita Dean (2006), Emily Jacir (2008), Hans-Peter Feldmann (2010), Danh Vo (2012) and Paul Chan (2014).

The artists involved:

TANIA BRUGUERA (born in 1968, Havana) lives and works in a multitude of projects according to its cities. In his political work based on performance, Bruguera engages communities through participatory projects that defines “art útil ‘(useful art). The artist’s activism draws attention to the injustices and promotes social change, as the Immigrant Movement International, which operates as a social center representing the interests of migrant communities in Queens, New York.

TANIA BRUGUERA (nata nel 1968, Havana) vive e lavora in una moltitudine di città a seconda dei suoi progetti. Nelle sua opera politica basata sulla performance, Bruguera coinvolge le comunità per mezzo di progetti partecipativi che definisce “arte útil” (arte utile). MARK LECKEY (born in 1964, Birkenhead, UK) lives and works in London. The fluid by Leckey ranges in its format from video to sculpture, music, performance, installation up to the exhibition. His work unravels the tangled forces of desire, imagination and cultural fidelity that affect our daily experience, absorbing the rarefied references and low-level in a unique artistic vocabulary.

MARK LECKEY (nato nel 1964, Birkenhead, UK) vive e lavora a Londra. L’opera fluida di Leckey spazia nel suo formato dal video alla scultura, alla musica, la performance, l’installazione fino alla mostra. Il suo lavoro dipana le aggrovigliate forze del desiderio, dell’immaginazione e della fedeltà culturale che condizionano la nostra esperienza giornaliera, assorbendo riferimenti rarefatti e di basso livello in un vocabolario artistico unico.

RALPH LEMON (born in 1952, Cincinnati) lives and works in New York. Lemon is choreographer, author, filmmaker and visual artist whose interdisciplinary performance projects are inspired by political and personal relations stories to illuminate the complexity and raw beauty of the human experience. The artist combines dance, film, text, music and installation in evocative sculptural works that explore the themes of identity, loss and body.

RALPH LEMON (nato nel 1952, Cincinnati) vive a lavora a New York. Lemon è coreografo, autore, regista e artista visivo i cui progetti di performance interdisciplinare si ispirano alle storie politiche ed alle relazioni personali per illuminare la complessità e cruda bellezza dell’esperienza umana. L’artista coniuga danza, film, testo, musica ed installazione sculturale in opere evocative che esplorano i temi dell’identità, la perdita ed il corpo.

 LAURA OWENS (born in 1970, Euclid, Ohio) lives and works in Los Angeles. Over the past two decades, the influential work of Owen has questioned the parameters and the ability to create and view the painting nowadays. He has continuously shifted the scope of his work, incorporating figurative, abstract, digital techniques and gestural marking multivalent compositions that confuse the expectations of the pictorial space.

LAURA OWENS (nata nel 1970, Euclid, Ohio) vive e lavora a Los Angeles. Negli ultimi due decenni, l’influente lavoro di Owen ha messo in questione i parametri e le possibilità di creare e visionare la pittura al giorno d’oggi. Ha continuamente spostato l’ambito della sua opera, incorporando il figurativo, l’astratto, le tecniche digitali e la marcatura gestuale in composizioni multivalenti che confondono le attese dello spazio pittorico.

WAEL Shawky (born in 1971, Alexandria, Egypt) lives and works in Alexandria, Egypt. Shawky working on multiple means – in particular the film, performance, sculpture and design, to locate the roots of the current geopolitical realities in the remote past and heavily mediated. He describes himself as a translator of assumptions and cultural narrative, drawing from mythical or historical sources to create indelible visual experiences ranging from pathos, humor, beauty and horror.

WAEL SHAWKY (nato nel 1971, Alessandria d’Egitto) vive e lavora ad Alessandria d’Egitto. Shawky lavora su molteplici mezzi – in particolare la pellicola, la performance, la scultura ed il disegno, per localizzare le radici delle attuali realtà geopolitiche nel passato remoto e pesantemente mediato. Si descrive come traduttore di assunti e narrative culturali, traendo da fonti mitiche o storiche per creare esperienze visive indelebili che oscillano tra pathos, umorismo, bellezza ed orrore.

ANICKA YI (nata nel 1971, Seoul) vive e lavora a New York. Yi coniuga e mette in contrasto materiali organici e sintetici per creare installazioni distintive ed immergenti che esplorano l’ibrido e l’entropico, con materiali deperibili che marciscono, si putrefanno e fermentano. I miscugli viscerali ed alchemici dell’artista aggrediscono i sensi; alcuni dei suoi progetti incorporano cibi e processi di cottura, mentre altri sono progettati per emanare profumi calibrati minuziosamente.

The Program HUGO BOSS Arts

With the aim of encouraging the exchange of art and fashion, HUGO BOSS opens its Art Sponsorship program in 1995 as part of its corporate culture.
