Eddie Redmayne is the new face of Prada Men FW16 Campaign

La nuova campagna Fall/Winter 2016 di Prada ha un nuovo volto, quello del premio Oscar Eddie Redmayne (per il film La teoria del tutto), quest’anno poi è stato nominato per The Danish Girl e sarà protagonista dell’adattamento per il cinema del libro di J.K. Rowling Animali fantastici e dove trovarli.

Dietro l’obbiettivo il fotografo Craig McDean ha ricreato le atmosfere dei dipinti neoclassici del 1800, giocando con la profondità in un gioco di superfici a metà fra illusione e realtà. In questi “tableaux” Eddie Redmayne interpreta diversi ruoli, davanti ad uno sfondo grigio o rosso intenso è l’eroe o il malvagio o il rivoluzionario.

Le pose sono decise e statuarie e ricordano gli atteggiamenti dei grandi protagonisti della letteratura epica o delle collezioni conservate nei musei, artefici della storia e della memoria culturale.

Le fotografie riprendono e continuano lo spirito della sfilata di Prada Uomo Autunno/Inverno 2016, che proponeva un excursus attraverso le epoche del passato come una riflessione sul presente.

La collezione si diletta a fare allusioni di sapore romantico e accosta di proposito un’infinità di look e materiali con spontanea irrazionalità.

Il risultato d’insieme è una mascolinità moderna e al passo coi tempi, in cui il viaggio terreno si affianca a una coraggiosa esplorazione di sé e a un modo di pensare obliquo, originale.

The present moment presents itself as a theatre of history. Prada’s Fall/Winter 2016 Menswear campaign performs this idea in a suite of striking portrait allusions.

One of contemporary cinema’s most celebrated actors  Eddie Redmayne  takes centre stage. Redmayne is no stranger to immersing himself in historically significant characters. His lead roles have won him Tony and Olivier awards for the play Red and an Oscar for The Theory of Everything. Following his Oscar-nominated role in The Danish Girl, later this year sees the anticipated release of JK Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, in which Redmayne stars.

Craig McDean’s pictures invoke 19th century neo-classical paintings, which famously played with surface and depth, illusion and reality. Redmayne, here, assumes a number of roles  hero, villain, revolutionary  either against a neutral grey background, or a rich red split by a romanticist view of idealized nature.

The poses are strident and statuesque. They echo the mannerisms of protagonists in great museum collections or epic literature, makers of history and cultural memory.

These photographs continue the spirit of the Prada Fall/Winter 2016 Menswear show, which presented an excursus through times past as a reflection on time present. The collection revels in Romantic references. It intentionally juxtaposes looks and countless materials into a kind of effortless irrationality.

Overall, the result is a contemporary masculinity that aligns worldly travel with intrepid self-knowledge and oblique, original thinking.
