When and how you decided that you wanted to be a designer?

I was 18 years old, just started the last year of high school and I was super sure I wasn’t going to end up as a lawyer or doctor. I’d been interested in art and design for a long time, took art courses and I was in love with printed textiles so I applied to the textile department of Moholy-Nagy University of Arts and Design in Budapest. After the second year I really enjoyed creating clothes and I couldn’t stop. So this all wasn’t really decided, it came natural.

It was your dream job?

It is. I don’t see myself doing anything else in the future. This is who I am.

Which is the first thing you designed and for who (yourself, a friend…)?

I don’t remember. But I do remember my first favourite piece I was really proud of.  It was the indoor plants printed silk dress I made for a competition, and I also used this print for my SS14 collection.

Who’s the designer you admire the most and why?

I wish I knew Stella McCartney in person. She must be a really engaging person. Whoever can manage a bunch of kids and such a great fashion brand, must be a genius.

Who’s your muse, your icon, when you create a dress?

The girl I want to become.

If you had to design an entire collection using just one color, which is the one you’d pick and why?

Great question. This season I’m really in love with the different shades of rust colour and also with cold, ice blue. Nude is also one of my favourite colours every season.

Who’s the first person you show your sketches to?

My friend Viola. She’s been my best friend and greatest critique since the beginning of university. I also show it to my PR+marketing team, I want to know their feedback immediately.

The fabric you love the most… silk, lace, velvet and why?

Cupro. It is a silk-feel natural fabric with a peachy surface and a cold feeling while wearing it, perfect for summer.

If your clothes had a soundtrack, which songs you’d choose?

Our show’s soundtrack really gave back the attitude behind the collection, you can listen to it here: https://soundcloud.com/ doritomcsanyi/catwalk-mix-for- dori-tomcsanyi-ss16-mbfwbp

Do you have any trick to avoid that “blank page” moment when you’re at the beginning of the designing of a new collection? Do you watch a movie, flip an old magazine…

I don’t think I ever had this feeling. Not with my own collections. I always know what I want to do for the next season even before finishing the previous one. With corporate design tasks like uniforms etc.. it has happened to me, but I’m really good at last minute work. I can work really fast under pressure, so that kind of solves things.

If you weren’t a designer which job in the fashion world you would like to do and why?

I haven’t really thought about it before. Probably fashion editor at a magazine. I really enjoy creative energy and team work.
