Interview with the photographer Silvija Markeviciute

Silvia Markeviciute: fotografa, illustratrice, stylist…lituana, al momento vive e lavora a Parigi. Intervista di Juste Zilionyte.

Hai un portfolio davvero bello, come ti sei innamorata della fotografia?

Sono sempre stata creativa da che mi ricordi, quando avevo 6 anni sono andata ad una scuola d’arte in Lituania dove ho studiato fino al diploma. Ho scoperto la fotografia quando avevo 14 anni e provavo a farmi delle foto con il mio cellulare, alcune erano interessanti e quasi non mi riconoscevo, mi piacque subito e continuai a scattare.

Come descriveresti il tuo stile fotografico, la tua visione?

Le mie foto sono oniriche e un po’ astratte, mi piace che sia il colore a “parlare”. Sono sempre alla ricerca di nuovi effetti, soggetti e prospettive per le mie foto.

Quali sono i tuoi principali obiettivi come artista?

Realizzare un capolavoro!

Raccontaci di un momento particolarmente interessante di un tuo shooting fotografico.

Ci sono sempre un sacco di momenti e situazioni su un set…a volte sono le persone con cui lavoro, a volte è la mia camera che fa la magia.

Non sei solo una fotografa, raccontaci anche delle altre tue passioni.

Mi sono diplomata in pittura e poi ho studiato fashion design. Disegno, dipingo e realizzo abiti sia per me stessa che per i miei amici: cappotti, vestiti e accessori. Di solito faccio anche il makeup e i capelli per le modelle con cui lavoro…e spesso sono anche la stylist.

Cosa ti ispira di più?

La natura, le combinazioni di colori, la musica e le belle persone…quelle forti e positive soprattutto.

Progetti per il futuro? a cosa stai lavorando per adesso?

Sto lavorando a un progetto con un amico, ci siamo incontrati a Parigi alla scuola di moda e di tanto in tanto lavoriamo insieme, ora sta tornano a Parigi dal Sud Africa per alcuni mesi per lavorare a degli editoriali insieme a me. Abbiamo intenzione di lavorare con diversi designer e magazine da tutto il mondo e lui si occuperà dello styling, a parte questo a Gennaio scatterò haute couture e menswear a Parigi.

Che consiglio daresti a un giovane fotografo?

Fai delle prove, gioca con la tua macchina fotografica e continua a farlo ogni giorno. Se senti che l’arte è la tua missione, lavora sodo…un altro importante fattore per i giovani fotografi è valutare e essere consapevoli del proprio talento e condividerlo con le persone.

Interview with the photographer Silvija Markeviciute

Silvija Markeviciute – photographer, designer, illustrator, stylist… She is from Lithuania, but currently creating in Paris, France. Interview by Juste Zilionyte.

You have an inspiring portfolio, how did you fall in love with photography?

I have been creating since I remember myself. When I was 6 years old I got into an art school in Lithuania where I studied until graduation. I discovered photography when I was 14 years old and tried to take a photograph of myself with my cell phone. The photograph I took was interesting and I couldn’t recognize myself. I loved it and kept doing it.

How would you describe your photography style, your vision?

My photographs are dreamy, a little bit abstract, I love making « color speak ». I am always searching for new effects, subjects and different perspectives for taking the picture.

What are your main goals as an artist?

Masterpiece!

Do you have the most memorable moment from any of your photo shoots that you can share with us?

There are lots of great moments that happened to me on set. Sometimes it’s people I am working with, sometimes it’s my camera making some magic.

We saw that you are not only a photographer. Tell us more about the other roles you do in your life.

I graduated in painting then I studied fashion design. I draw, paint, make clothes for myself and my friends: coats, dresses or accessories. I usually also do makeup, hair and style for my models before the shoot. 

What inspires you the most?

Nature, color combinations, music and beautiful individuals: strong, positive people. 

What plans do you have for the future? Any interesting projects coming up?

Right now I am preparing a project with a good friend of mine. We met during fashion studies in Paris and from time to time worked together. Right now he will come back to Paris from South Africa for a few months to work with me on editorials. We plan to collaborate with various designers and magazines from all around the world, my friend will style the shoots. I believe it will be a very exciting experience for both of us. Besides that, on January I plan to shoot Haute Couture and Menswear in Paris.

What advice could you give for the young photographers?

Test, learn, play with your camera and keep doing it every day. If you feel that art is your mission, then work for it. Along with, the very important task for many of young creators is to value the talent they have and share it with people.
