Interview with the designer Ksenia Schnaider (represented by More Dash agency)    

When and how you decided that you wanted to be a designer? 

Quando e come hai deciso che volevi diventare una stilista?

Ho prestissimo sentito il bisogno di iniziare a disegnare abiti e farne una professione quando studiavo storia all’università e i costumi tradizionali divennero la mia materia preferita e uno dei miei interessi principali.

I felt a first strong urge to start designing clothes on a professional level when I’ve been studying history at the university and traditional costumes turned to be my main scholar interest.

It was your dream job? Era il lavoro dei tuoi sogni?

Sono sempre stata affascinata dagli abiti, e come molti ho iniziato a fare degli abiti per me. Non credo di averlo percepito come un sogno il fatto di diventare una stilista, ma sono contenta che tutto si sia realizzato e che oggi sia il mio lavoro.

I’ve always been fascinated by clothing, and as for most designers everything started from creating the clothes for myself. I can’t say I had a perceived dream to become a designer, but I’m glad everything happened the way it happened.

Which is the first thing you designed and for who (yourself, a friend…)? Qual’è stata la prima cosa che hai progettato e realizzato?

È stato un cappotto molto semplice che ho realizzato per me stessa.

It was a simple coat I’ve designed for myself.

Who’s the designer you admire the most and why? Qual’è il designer che ammiri di più e perchè?

Mi piacciono tantissimi designer ma non qualcuno in particolare, e penso sia interessante e importante vedere il lavoro altrui anche per evitare di seguire il percorso di qualcun altr0.

I admire all the beautiful work but no particular designer, and I think it’s good for me as there is no chance I would unconsciously follow someone else’s path.

Who’s your muse, your icon, when you create a dress? Qual’è la tua musa, la tua icona quando disegni un abito?

La mia musa è la ragazza Kenia Schnaider, che è stilosa ma non ossessionata dalle cose trendy, intelligente e brillante, bella più sia fuori che dentro, di successo ma non fissata con la mondanità del successo…è molto cool ed equilibrata!

My constant muse is a perfect Ksenia Schnaider girl – the one who’s stylish yet not obsessed with all the trendy things, smart yet not defiantly highbrow, beautiful yet more with her soul than only face and body, successful yet not obsessed by mundane social success. She’s very cool and balanced!

If you had to design an entire collection using just one color, which is the one you’d pick and why?

Se dovessi disegnare un’intera collezione usando un solo colore, quale sceglieresti e perchè?

Penso che sceglierei il bianco. È il colore più neutro e penso che funzionerebbe.

I guess it would be white. It is the most blank colour so no overload would appear.

Who’s the first person you show your sketches to? A chi mostri per primo i tuoi bozzetti?

Prima di tutto a mio marito che è anche il mio miglior amico Anton Schnaider che condivide con me l’impegno per il nostro brand.

The fabric you love the most…silk, lace, velvet and why? Il tessuto o il materiale che ti piace di più e perchè?

Spesso lavoro con la seta matte e il cotone, sono morbidi al tatto, multifunzionali, possono essere usati come unico materiale e anche come base per le stampe. La mia ultima scoperta è l’alcantara italiano, mi piace il modo in cui mantiene la forma e si comporta nei tagli dei vestiti.

I often work with matte silk and cotton, they are soft, multi-functional, good for solo use as well as a base for prints. My latest favourite is Italian alcantara, I enjoy the way it keeps the shape and behaves itself in other technical moments.

If your clothes had a soundtrack, which songs you’d choose?

Se i tuoi vestiti avessero una colonna sonora, quale sarebbe?

Anton è molto appassionato di musica, specialmente dei generi elettronica e minimal. Si diverte a comporre dei brani musicali e spesso li usiamo come colonna sonora dei nostri show e alle presentazioni e siccome anche lui mi aiuta nel processo di creazione degli abiti, quale migliore e più vera colonna sonora potrebbe esserci?

Anton is keen on music, especially electronic and minimal. He writes great tunes and we use them for our presentations and shows. .. And since Anton helps me with designing the clothes, that’s the truest OST ever!

Do you have any trick to avoid that “blank page” moment when you’re at the beginning of the designing of a new collection? Do you watch a movie, flip an old magazine…

Hai un trucco per superare il momento della pagina bianca?

Di solito qui da Ksenia non abbiamo mai (per fortuna) un momento da “pagina bianca”. Siamo sempre immersi in un flusso di lavoro intenso e più spesso abbiamo il problema opposto, cioè quello di limitare le idee che vengono fuori perchè sono troppe…c’è sempre qualcosa a cui stiamo lavorando, non ci fermiamo mai.

Actually, we in Ksenia Schnaider studio never have this ‘blank page moment’. We are in a permanent flow of work, and more often we face the problem of limiting the ideas and concepts than their abscence. Also, we have a rather defined stylistical line so there is always a bone we have to put some meat on.

If you weren’t a designer which job in the fashion world you would like to do and why?

Se non fossi una stilista che altro lavoro nel campo della moda ti piacerebbe svolgere e perchè?

Ksenia Schnaider è un piccolo brand e tutti i membri del nostro staff sono multitask, ad esempio lo specialista delle PR allo stesso tempo anche impegnato nel fitting delle modelle…per quanto mi riguarda mi piace il campo della comunicazione ma fare la stilista rimane il lavoro migliore del mondo per me!

Ksenia Schnaider is a small house, and members of our team are multitaskers – for example, PR specialists and at the same time fitting models… I like communications, but to me, a fashion designer is still the best job!
