Interview with designer Avtandil   

When and how you decided that you wanted to be a designer? Quando e perchè hai deciso che avresti fatto il designer?

L’idea di diventare un designer si è presentata in modo inaspettato nella mia vita, molti anni dopo ho capito che era sempre stato il sogno della mia infanzia. In quel periodo stavo tutto il tempo a disegnare “belle ragazze con bellissimi vestiti” sui muri e sui banchi della scuola senza pensarci troppo anche perchè questo campo non era per niente sviluppato nella mia nazione. Ciò non di meno disegnavo con passione e frequentavo le lezioni di disegno a scuola, ero innamorato della pittura e lo sono ancora oggi. È stato grazie a una pubblicità sentita in radio che mi ha fatto accendere la famosa lampadina quando ero uno studente dell’accademia di belle arti, lo spot annunciava che si sarebbe tenuto in Georgia il primo Avant-garde fashion festival nel 1995, ed è stata la prima volta che ho provato a fare il designer e lo sono ancora oggi.

The idea of becoming a clothing designer appeared quite unexpectedly in my life. Nevertheless as I realized afterwards it may have been the dream of my childhood. At that time I used to draw “pretty girls with beautiful dresses” on the walls and desks of school without any consideration, since this filed or art was not developed in our country.  I used to be passionate with drawing and used to attend classes at drawing school. I was always fond of painting and that is true even now. It was a radio advertisement that made me try in the field, when I was a student at the Faculty of Painting of the Academy of Fine Arts. The advertisement announcedthat the first Avant-garde fashion festival would be held in Georgia in 1995. It was the first time I tried and I have been performing this work since that time.

It was your dream job? Era il lavoro dei tuoi sogni?

Ho già detto prima che è una cosa che ho capito più tardi.

As I have already mentioned I have realized later that this was the work of my dream.

Which is the first thing you designed and for who (yourself,a friend…)? Qual’è stata la prima cosa che hai realizzato e per chi?

I primi abiti che ho disegnato per me erano forse per me o per mia madre (la mia prima ammiratrice delle mie creazioni)…in verità non mi ricordo molto bene ;-).

The first clothes designed by me were perhaps intended for me or my mother(the first customers of my clothes), I do not remember exactly.

Who’s the designer you admire the most and why? Qual’è il designer che ammiri di più e perchè?

Ci sono stati dei periodi della mia carriera in cui le influenze di altri designer ispiravano il mio lavoro e in quel preciso momento per me erano i migliori…ad esempio Alexander McQueen e Yohji Yamamoto. Comunque ho sempre lavorato per cercare di rendere le loro influenze delle semplici ispirazioni e che non si vedessero nelle mie collezioni. Oggi amo molto il lavoro di Haider Ackermann, ma perchè mi piace non saprei dirlo.

There have always been periods in my career when I was under the influence of different designers and I thought that they were the best designers, for instance Alexander McQueen and Yohji Yamamoto. However I always tried not to reflect their influence in my collection. Nowadays I like the design work of Haider Ackermann, but why I do i do not have the answer, I simply like it.

Who’s your muse, your icon, when you create a dress? Chi è la tua musa, la tua icona quando crei un abito?

Mia moglie è stata la mia musa negli ultimi 10 anni, probabilmente cerco di immaginare ogni capo delle mie collezioni per lei.

My wife has been my major muse for 10 years. Perhaps I try to imagine or imagine each garment of my collections on her.

If you had to design an entire collection using just one color, which is the one you’d pick and why? Se dovessi disegnare una collezione usando un solo colore, quale sceglieresti e perchè?

Come ho detto prima sono un pittore da sempre e pensare e immaginare con un solo colore è molto difficile, ma se proprio dovessi sceglierei il nero perchè mi darebbe comunque la possibilità di progettare i miei capi.

As I have already mentioned, I am a painter by profession and working in one color is difficult for me. If I had to choose I would have chosen black, since the color gives possibility of constructive working

Who’s the first person you show your sketches to? A chi mostri per primo i tuoi bozzetti?

All’inizio mostro i disegni iniziali a chi lavora nel mio atelier.

At first my initial sketches are seen by my constructors in my laboratory.

Which is the fabric you love the most…silk, lace, velvet and why? Qual’è il tessuto o il materiale che ami di più e perchè?

È difficilissimo separe e  isolare un solo tessuto, nei miei vestiti amo soprattutto la sintesi di una varietà di tessuti per i miei capi.

It is difficult to separate one tissue. I like synthesis of a variety of tissues in my clothes.

If your clothes had a soundtrack, which songs you’d choose? Se i tuoi vestiti avessero una colonna sonora, quale canzone sceglieresti?

Mentre lavoravo alla mia ultima collezione ascoltavo spesso “Take me to church” di Hozier e ne ho usato un frammento come colonna sonora della sfilata (le immagini della sfilata sono quelle della gallery)

While working on my last collection one song came to my mind “take me to church” by Hozier and I used a fragment from it during the fashion show.

Do you have any trick to avoid that “blank page” moment when you’re at the beginning of the designing of a new collection? Do you watch a movie, flip an old magazine… Hai un trucco per superare il momento iniziale del “foglio bianco” quando inizi a lavorare a una nuova collezione?

Le mie ispirazioni sono tantissime…viaggiare, l’architettura delle città, la natura e i popoli sono grandi fonti di ispirazione. Non posso tralasciare anche le vecchie riviste, i disegni e i film…all’inizio non sai mai da dove arriverà l’ispirazione…ti posso dire però che nelle ultime 3 stagioni sono stati i quadri di un famoso pittore georgiano Oleg Timchenko.

Travelling, architecture of different cities, nature and foreign people are sources of  new inspirations for me. I cannot exclude old magazines, drawings and films either. I never know in advance where the inspiration comes from. I can tell you one thing exactly that the main  source of inspiration during three seasons were the drawings of famous Georgian painter Oleg Timchenko.

If you weren’t a designer which job in the fashion world you would like to do and why? Se non fossi un designer quale altro lavoro nel mondo della moda ti piacerebbe fare e perchè?

Faccio questo lavoro da 20 anni e sono innamorato di quello che faccio al punto che non riesco a immaginarmi in un altro ruolo. Amo gli abiti e rispetto i designer in maniera totale e se dovessi scegliere forse vorrei creare un concept store dove accogliere il lavoro dei designer che mi piacciono per farli conoscere al mondo.

I have been doing this work for 20 years already and I am so enchanted, I cannot imagine life without it. I am so fond of  clothing design and respect the designers greatly that If I think for a moment I would have hold a conceptual shop where I would have offered the selected works of other designers,I underline the work,to the customers.
