Pursuing a totally sustainable lifestyle is not always easy and, now more than ever, more eco-friendly clothing options are required than those offered by the fast fashion industry. This is an objective that can be achieved with a production cycle based on circular economy models: upcycling is a big step forward in this direction.
Upcycling is a neologism that combines two concepts that do not always go hand in hand: on the one hand, the idea of ​​recycling; and, on the other hand, the idea of ​​improvement and quality (even if using waste materials), hence the prefix “up”.
In a Circular Economy the aim is to create less waste, making the most of every possible material and fabric used in the production process. In the case of Max Mara, the surpluses deriving from the camel fabric cutting process of the legendary coats (and not only) are recovered and reused to create an insulator thermal, a padding capable of retaining the same properties as virgin materials, without the need for further consumption of raw materials. The particular form of padding is called CameLuxe. CameLuxe is created in three phases: first, the recovered materials are collected and selected in our factories in Italy; second, a mechanical process transforms them into very thin fibers; finally, the fibers are mixed with recycled polyester, creating a high-performance insulating material, ready to be worked for shape the padding.
This process, for which a patent application has been filed, makes it possible to create a highly resilient product, with extraordinary characteristics of elasticity and strength, and with a great thermal insulation capacity. Made with a less impacting process in terms of energy consumption, waste production, water use and CO2 emissions, CameLuxe represents a new frontier, giving new life to precious materials otherwise discarded. This project is developed under the aegis of the Global Recycling Standard, a certification promoted by Textile Exchange, a non-profit organization that for over 15 years has supported the responsible and sustainable development of products in the textile industry, and by ICEA, a national institute without purpose for profit which certifies that companies operate in line with sustainable standards for the environment and for people. Perseguire uno stile di vita totalmente sostenibile non è sempre facile e, ora più che mai, si rendono necessarie opzioni di abbigliamento più eco-friendly rispetto a quelle proposte dall’industria del fast fashion. Un obiettivo, questo, che può essere raggiunto con un ciclo di produzione basato su modelli di Economia Circolare: l’upcycling è un grande passo in avanti in questa direzione.
Upcycling è un neologismo che unisce due concetti che non sempre vanno di pari passo: da un lato, l’idea di riciclare; e, dall’altro, l’idea di miglioramento e di qualità (anche se si utilizzano materiali di scarto), da qui il prefisso “up”.
In un’Economia Circolare lo scopo è quello di creare meno rifiuti, sfruttando al massimo ogni possibile materiale e tessuto utilizzato nel processo produttivo. Nel caso di Max Mara, le eccedenze derivanti dal processo di taglio dei tessuti di cammello dei leggendari cappotti (e non solo) vengono recuperati e riutilizzati per creare un isolante
termico, un’imbottitura in grado di conservare le stesse proprietà dei materiali vergini, senza necessità di un ulteriore consumo di materie prime. La particolare forma di imbottitura è denominata CameLuxe. CameLuxe viene creata in tre fasi: primo, i materiali recuperati vengono raccolti e selezionati nelle nostre manifatture in Italia; secondo, un processo meccanico li trasforma in fibre molto sottili; infine, le fibre vengono mescolate con poliestere riciclato, creando un materiale isolante ad alte prestazioni, pronto per essere lavorato per
dare forma all’imbottitura.
Questo processo, per il quale è stata depositata una istanza di brevetto, consente di creare un prodotto altamente resiliente, con straordinarie caratteristiche di elasticità e resistenza, e con una grande capacità d’isolamento termico. Realizzato con un processo meno impattante in termini di consumo energetico, di produzione di rifiuti, di uso di acqua ed emissioni di CO2, CameLuxe rappresenta una nuova frontiera, dando nuova vita a materiali preziosi altrimenti scartati. Questo progetto è sviluppato sotto l’egida del Global Recycling Standard, una certificazione promossa da Textile Exchange, organizzazione non-profit che da oltre 15 anni sostiene lo sviluppo responsabile e sostenibile dei prodotti nell’industria tessile, e da ICEA, istituto nazionale senza fini di lucro che certifica che le aziende operino in linea con standard sostenibili per l’ambiente e per le persone.
